On the whole they all meet the same safety standards so you just need to go somewhere and have one properly fitted to your car by a trained fitter. There are differences of course and some are slightly better than others, Which is a good place to check that out but the best seat in the world is useless if it doesn't actually fit well in your car and since all cars are slightly different then the seat that is best in one car may not be the best choice for yours.

I agree the best car on the market may not fit your car.
When you factor in seat belt length as well there is a lot to consider.

I used a M&P O stage and it has done DD3 really well for 16m. It is heavy, even when she was a 6lb newborn. A friend has the maxi cosi and loves it and I think it scores well.

When you move to stage 1 have a look at extended rear facing ones. There are some realy good ones that are not too expensive and ther are safer. Again the car you have influences your decision

First step is t go to your library and get the latest Which? report on carseats - last time I looked the MaxiCosi came up best - with a extra bit of safety if you have isofix...

But the next thing to do is to work out which is safest for your car. If you're in Essex you can visit these people who do a free service - there is also lots of info on their website.

Finally it's worth, IMO, getting the best rated one you can - plan to buy own-brand nappies and put the 'savings' towards a car-seat if you need to budget closely; ALWAYS read the instructions booklet from cover to cover; practice putting it in and out of your car before you have your baby. Get your OH to do the same.

Hope that helps

Are you looking for something that will make a travel system?
Definitely get your hands on Which. Great advice.

I went for the MaxiCosi Cabriofix as it's a good make and fits my travel system. Looking at the car seats thread in "products" might help? If nowt else, post you query there. Lots of people wanting to help on there...

I just want the safest not worried about cost or fitting to my travel system as I think its the one thing you cant really go too cheap on but then they say not always the most expensive is the best so was just wondering what people think.
Have looked at wich and they say graco is rated safest has anyone else used this seat thanks everyone :D .

I used a graco with ds and it was fine, we had no problems with it. It came with the travel system we bought.

This time we have gone for a britax.

We had a graco for the first 6 months with ds as that was the make of the travel system. Bought because I fell in love with the pram! He's now into the bigger car seat and we bought http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxi-Cosi-Axiss-Forward-Facing-Reflection/dp/tech-data/B001P2QS3K/ref=de_a_smtd?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21 this one as it swivels and I found that a godsend for my dodgy back/wriggly baby. And it reclines as well which is quite nice too.

We are getting the klippan kiss for dc3, rear facing until 18kgs so until 3/4years old. I didn't really know about long term rear facing seats with the first two dcs but it's def the safest option.

I got a Britax one - if there's a Mothercare near to you I'd recommend asking them to try a few in your car. I found them very helpful, and they found me one with last year's fabric which was heavily discounted.

We got maxicosi cabriofix, all pretty standard!

We had the Jane Strata because of the differing angles you can lay it at which is supposed to be better for babies pulmonary systems. We did consider a completely lie-flat but they don't last as long and babies grow quickly! However, we do a lot of driving so we needed a seat which was safer for breathing as the angle babies are placed at in car seats is not good for them for more than an hour or two.

We now have a BeSafe Izi Combi Isofix which is a Which? best buy and is rear facing until 4 years old. When we had visitors who needed to have a lift I checked and apparantly you can use it from birth as it is a stage 0+ seat. Their 6 month old was very happy in it. It is hard to find stockists in the UK, I got mine mail order. It is impossible to fit it wrongly though as there are green markers to show when it's installed correctly.
