Need positive stories where BFP was not getting darker quickly

Apologies in advance for this - I'm in a very needy mood today as have just had a BFP following an ectopic pregnancy back in May 2010.

I had thought my period was due today, though could be tomorrow or next day I suppose.

I've been getting v faint BFPs since Monday though. Wednesday's was still faint but obviously there. Tested again today for reassurance (idiot) and the line is hardly any darker.

Please come and tell me this is normal. They are cheapy test strips that are supposedly sensitive to 10miu.

Another question now I think of it: was seeing GP for an ill DD yesterday and she phoned hospital re BFP. They want me in for a scan on Wednesday, having been told all my dates correctly.

Is this not a bit early - I'd be 4+5 max? Will they be able to see anything either in right place or in tube?

Hi, I got a faint positive the day I was due with this pregnancy, and they stayed faint for about the first 10 days, before becoming a lot darker. I must have tested every day for about the first two weeks! HCG levels fluctuate woman to woman and pregnancy to pregnancy.

I can't answer your question about what they will see at the scan sorry, I presume it's to check that it's not another ectopic and that it's all happening in the right place?

Congratulations Smile

Thank you! I know I'm being crazy here, but it's just vile, the worry.

I just need to hear stories like yours today to keep me going.

I was the same - absolutely petrified the bubba wasn't going to stick, but read a few threads on here which calmed me down, and also got a virtual kick up the ass from a couple of ladies and expressly told to step away from the tests!!! Grin.

Yes, will try to step away I think. Do need that kick up the arse as well.

Will maybe go to soft play or something this afternoon - that's surely punishment enough.

Similar predicament: but not quite! AF due Monday. Did early test today: negative. What are the chances of it turning positive when AF is due? When did you ladies test positive: how common is it to get early positives?

I used IC's (also 10miu) AND first response early result with both my last and this pregnancy...

With the last one I was still getting stark white bfn at 12 dpo on the ic's. I left it a few days and at 15dpo (the day after my period ws due) I tried again and there was a very faint line. Dipped the First response in the same sample and got a very obvious line. A digi in the same sample gave me positive 1-2 weeks. I carried on using ic's as the days/weeks went by because a) I was nervous and b) I had a huge stash! They didn't get a decent line until about 20 dpo.

THis one, I was getting weird virtually not there they were so faint lines on the ic's from 8/9 dpo. By 10 dpo it was still incredibly faint but I knew I wasn't tricking myself it was there, so I cracked open a First response and the line was very faint, but there. Once I had the bfp, I left the ic's out of the equation and tested every other day with the first response up to 18 dpo... by 16 dpo the test line was much darker than the control!

I think, from my experience, and from what I read with other ladies using the 10miu ic's that the ic's must have minimal dye in them, or something... they are notorious for taking quite some time to give a decent line. In that respect, I know all the 'sensible' advice is to stop testing but I'd be tempted to get a 'decent' test. But, uh, yeah... stop testing! Grin

Hey, and congratulations! Hope everything is just fine - I wouldn't assume otherwise from ic's Smile

Thanks Manda. I like that explanation - that the internet cheapies may detect early but don't get dark for ages. I'm sticking to that one.

Perhaps next week I'll dust off my purse and invest in a first response or similar.

Wishinandahopin I feel for you. It's a fairly hideous merry-go-round. I don't think you can ever give up hope until you get af. Early positives depend on so many things - type of test, whether you're quite right with your dates, how quick was implantation, fluctuations in rate of hcg increase, etc etc.

Or at least that's what I told myself after every bfn. And there have been many, sigh.

Sometimes I just simply love Mumsnet because it makes me realise everyone is as mad as me when upduffed or ttc is great to share worries with other women and realise we're all the same deep down!

I know. Have you seen the thread where the poor lass noticed some brown blobs down the loo after she'd been for a wee?

It was a work loo so highly likely to be someone else's poo (nice) but she was panicking about mc.

I can totally relate to that. But I couldn't help Grin ing.

PS Wishinandahopin after a few goes on the ttc buses I would say that it definitely aint over til the fat aunty flo sings, and it is pretty common to get bfn's before a faint line Smile. Good luck Smile.

Hi, I had a very feint line on my first pg test (just over 5 weeks), only other test I did was a clearblue digital later that day as I wasn't expecting to be pg so was in too much shock to be capable of calculating dates properly, so I have no experience of whether the line got any darker but I am now 28 weeks, so not having a dark line doesn't seem to have been an indication of anything bad.

Unless you have other symptoms that suggest miscarriage I'm not sure there is any good to be gained from testing over and over again, the tests are designed to give a yes or no answer not chart the progress of a pregnancy. You could easily just be in possession of tests that don't go particularly dark (despite what they probably show on the packet "for illustration purposes only").

Congratulations Smile and hope all goes well with the scan next week.

Yep mine only started to get dark about 5 days after period due. Am now 33 weeks. Preg tests are the work of the devil!
I never got dark lines with internet cheapies. If you can't stop yourself testing, get a proper high street one.

With my v early MC, line was darkish but started to fade but I was having brown spotting for a few days that eventually turned into blood.

Yes, the eBay cheapies take forever to get dark and I have very high bHCG in early pregnancy. With every pregnancy I Blush line them up next to each other and see the progression over the course of about six weeks. Makes for a very long line the amount I get through and DH does think I am mad.

ANYWAY, yes, it is completely normal. The only ones that are a bit better at showing a progression earlier are the First Response, and they don't with everyone, me included. I stopped playing that game when I realised it was bankrupting me! I see lots of people's great progressions but mine just stay faint for ages and then about 18dpo suddenly get dark, go figure.

If they're getting lighter after a week then that might indicate something is up, but again, tests have their own agendas.. different dye levels even in the same batches, not to mention your wee has different amounts of bHCG in it depending on time of day, what you ate, what you drank, when you last went, the lot.

Keep us updated!!

I'm scared to see them Sparklies tbh in case your 14 dpo is darker than mine!

Will PM you if I pluck up the courage.

Haven't read any posts but positive tale from me.

I've been pregnnt twice and on both occasions only believed that I was pregnant after the MW had confirmed the pregnancy and heard the babies heart beat as though my periods stopped I didn't ever really get anything more than the most wishy washy of lines (and my first pregnancy ws a twin pregnancy Grin).

I know that ultimately this doesn't help you but if you think you might be you just need to proceed as if you are and get a MW or other medic to confirm it.

(Still got a wee stick from each pregnancyGrin Oddly the line has finally gone dark on the first one (now that DT's are past their 7th birthday!)

yeah mine were faint too and as far as i know , crosses everything, at 13weeks everything ok. I also did the i'll just do another test thing and then totally panicked when it didn't get darker, also had a supermarket one that didn't work full stop ahhhh!
I decided it was just causing me too much stress and decided to think positive unless good old aunt flo made her appearance.

I didn't actually mark out individual days (more like I used a test every time I went - ahh, eBay cheapies!) but from looking at it, it didn't really start getting dark until somewhere towards the end, so around 17dpo. They were really faint until then!

I also didn't get darker lines with the crappy internet cheapies. Bought a superdrug (moderately) cheapie - immediate and very convincing line.

They also test at 10miu so I concluded that the internet cheapies were somewhat unreliable. Good luck!

Ah this is great, thanks folks. I'm feeling a bit better today.

I'm reassured by slightly crampy feelings which are not like the shooting pains to one side I had with the ep.

So I'm going to keep as busy as possible until Wednesday and get the scan over with. If good news I might treat myself to a shop bought test. :)

Hey

I did more than one test and regretted the worry it caused me, my lines got lighter! But if u read the small print and visit sites like peeonastick.com u will see that this can happen.

Sadly such an early scan may not alleviate your worries purely because its so early to see anything

I had a scan at 4 weeks due to having problems falling pregnant (i obviously didnt know was pregnant at that point) they knew i had ovulated and from which side and that the lining was good...but not that i was pregnant.

I then found out i was pregnant (go figure!) at 5 weeks I had spotting so they brought me in for a scan ( due previous losses but coincidently i had restested but with lighter lines) and they found a sac and said was showing good start of pregnancy but would have to wait 2 weeks to see whether it was progressing. I tested again during those long 2 weeks and my lines were never darker than my first test.

At 7 weeks they found a heart beat in my little sac and yolk!! So basically I am sharing 2 things here...be prepared for very few answers if u are scanned so early...and then be prepared for a long 2 weeks.

But please stop testing!!! I am now 16 weeks pregnant so I can't tell u not to worry because we all do but stop putting yourself and your baby thru stress. I tested from the same pack of expensive tests and was warned that each result could appear differently.

I managed the wait by hoping for the best but preparing for the worst because that helps me and things turned out fine.

On the flip side....when I lost my angel last year, my lines got darker and darker!!!! I shall never become a slave to tests ever again.

Good luck and I'm sure things will be fine and welcome to a lifes worth of worrying because once u get your good news...youll find something else to worry about (I'm currently in...why does my bump not match other peoples at my stage...step away from the Internet!!! Tsk like I'll listen to my own advice Wink
