Hi everyone,

I am now a Mum to toddler again after many years and find I worry so much more than I used to.DS loves food especially fruit which of course I encourage but am so worried of choking. Our fruit bowl is always full and he likes to reach up and grab some now and then.He loves apples especially but I still worry even when I chop them up and supervise him at the table. What do you guys do?

DS eats everything whole

has your DS had episodes of choking in the past?

I certainly used to when my dd was that age. I've only learnt from MN that people chop up grapes too!

My 3 DC's all have apples and no problems here.

I've got two 3 year olds and a 22month old.

I give him apples whole. I think it's probably safer that he takes a bite that's the right size for him than me giving him chunks. Grapes on the other hand I do always cut up - he has a track record of choking on them, so I cut them into quarters.

I chop up grapes but my husband doesnt. When DS was a baby he used to do this really strange choking thing even when no food was involved.Perhaps thats where I get this anxiety from..Rubyslippers how old is your DS?

He is 2.9 years

DD has always helped herself to whole ones.

Sazzles glad I am not the only one to eat the core.

Dd has apples, grapes (cut in half), plums and nectarines (under supervision!). She is 23mo.

I only chop things I know won't get finished whole, although ds prefers to have a whole apple that I then finish off.

Hi Greenparrot, I have given DD apple slices since she was about 8 months old, supervised only of course, she loves to crunch on them. I do cut the skin off and I wouldn't consider giving her a whole one yet, she's only 15mo. She has choked once but coughed it up and all was fine. Grapes I also cut at least in half, depends on the size of the grape.

My two year old eats apples. I might chop it up if there are bad bits but he usually just eats it.

I slice grapes in half for my 19 month old but I give him an apple whole and he usually wants me to take a bite out first to start him off

My 16 month old eats whole apples - core and all! He's never choked or even gagged on one.

Was a while ago but I seem to remember I didn't need to feed them apples. They fed themselves on them. By the handful.

DS2 - 18mths eats apples whole, that way he can bite off a better size piece for his mouth, otherwise it seems to take him ages to chew it.

Thank you all, perhaps I just need to chill out a little...as DH suggests.I am a huge fruit girl so want him to be able to eat as much as he likes. The baby situation was quite horrible, friends of ours used to really worry and want to call 111 (in our country) but it always passed after a few seconds. He is absolutely fine now and just wants to be the same as his sister.BTW it is so nice to have all these replies on such a rainy old day...

My dd 2 years loves apples but if I give them whole, she spits out the skin as she nibbles that for some reason and then bites the apple so I often cut into thing slices, when the whole lot get easily eaten. Grapes used to cut in half until I was sure the dc were biting and chewing, I also say crunch it with your teeth and that helps.

I always chop up grapes as they are prime choking size and easy to inhale, but DD was eating pears, plums, nectarines whole from about 10m. Not so much apples as they are a bit harder and she's not that fussed on then but I certainly wouldn't have a problem giving them to her whole (22mo). However, supervising him is a good idea, it's not a bad thing to encourage sitting down to eat.

DS1 nabbed an apple and started eating it whole at 18 months (with only 2 teeth to show for himself) so have been giving him apples whole since then. Though oddly now aged 3 he'll only eat pears chopped up and prefers grapes chopped in half....

14mo ds2 eats them whole (not quite sure how as he only has 4 teeth).

2.11 yo doesn't eat them or anything else of any merit.

DD (2.6yo) eats apples whole, but often needs the first bite doing to start her off as she slipped and smashed her two front teeth six months ago.
