Relocation - where shall we move ?

Presently in central london but looking to move out. As DP can work from home we are very flexible, too much choice and therefore no idea where to look !!

We need:

  • Central London accessible by rail in 2 hours door to door
  • Major airport no more than 2 hours away
  • Good state schools ( primary & secondary )
  • 3/4 bed house no more than 300K
  • Large town / small city with loads for kids to do
  • Countryside easily accessible
  • Happy to go any direction though would prefer not to go east of london.

    Any thoughts ?

How about York, Kaz? It's where i grew up & i think it ticks all your boxes. Though maybe the property prices might be a bit high. you can get to King's Cross in less than 2 hours, Manchester airport is easily accesible & it's generally a nice place.

Solihull:

Bham Intl Railway straight into Euston - 5-10mins away

Bham Intl Airport - the same

Good schools Schools

Countryside - within 5 mins

Good shopping locally - Touchwood

Bullring in Brum - 15 mins by train

Housing - local estate agent

I wouldn't live anywhere but here (N. Cheshire/S. Manchester) because it has everything imo. Where I live:

  • 10 mins from Manchester Airport
  • 10 mins from M6
  • On the metrolink so can get into Manchester in about 10-15 mins
  • shopping galore - Manchester, Trafford Centre, The Lowry, enormous John Lewis and M&S nearby too
  • fantastic primaries and some of the top state grammar schools in the country
  • 10-15 mins from countryside - stately homes 10 mins away include Dunham Massey and Tatton Park

    Except for you it may be too far away from London...for me, it couldn't be far enough!! Hate it, hate it, hate it - 5 years there was enough to last me a lifetime

how about New Forest / Bournemouth?

90 mins to Waterloo or less
same to Heathrow by car or coach

(that's where I grew up, although I certainly don't live there anymore but it seems like it has all your points)

Hows about Nottingham (2 hrs by train) Leicester (1.5hrs by train) Derby (2 hrs by train) all have lovely areas in which to live and all have great facilities!

Brighton and Hove is full of people who have relocated from London and there must be a reason why they are all so keen!

would thoroughly recommend Brighton We movewd here 6 years ago and would never go back!Sea in one direction countryside in the other Lots of good schools and parks and a really lively family atmosphere can't rate it highly enough Also v easy to visit friends in London but you'll find them all coming to you Every one loves it!

I know its quite "east" but you could be describing Norwich, up here in Norfolk!
Train is about one hour fifty i think, We have an expanding airport, just adding cheap flights to Paris etc in 2005. Stanstead is only an hour and ten mins or so. Lots of good state schools. You could get a very nice house for 300,000! Lots to do here and more shops on the way in a new mall. Easy to get to lovely countryside AND the sea. It really is great here. Good Luck!

Surrey out - as we need a spacious house as DP will be working from home. Too expensive, and near my parents !

Nottingham out - don't like the town centre and near my brother !

Manchester too far away as DP needs to go to meetings in London occasionally.

Otherwise dead excited by some of the ideas. Brighton, Bournemouth, Norwich, York, Solihull, etc..

Another variable - DP works in IT/telecoms industry. If his job disapears we need an area where it will be possible to get another job in the same sort of area, as don't to want to have to move again.

Hi Kaz33, shame you don't wana go to Notts then! as has loads of telecoms companies! but staying away from family can often be better!!! What's new forest way like for the commute into london, as its gorgeous country down there?

How about Wiltshire/Avon. I come from a small town in Wilthire about 1/2 hour by car from Bath, 40 mins from Bristol and 40 mins from Swindon which are all great shopping centres. Countryside is lovely and is right on your doorstep with major cities like Bath, Bristol and Swindon within easy reach. Should easily be able to get a decent house for £300K. South coast is about 1 hour away and London within 2 hours by train. Heathrow well less than 2 hours away and Bristol Airport too. I'd love to go back there to live but unfortunatley DH needs to be close to London for work. Another area that I would love to live in in Cambridgeshire, a litle further North than us in Hertfordshire. Not sure about house prices but every other box would have a tick in for you. How exciting for you

What about High Wycombe? Ex dh and I considered it briefly once as it was cheap in terms of housing, close enough to London and seemed nice when I visited. Will see if I can find out a bit more! Countryside is def easily accessible, isn't it in the Chilterns?

Agree with SuzyWong - Hampshire/ Dorset is great. Has added bonus for your DH of HUGE AT&T base, and HQ for IBM UK in Portsmouth. Also IBM bases in Winchester & Basingstoke.

Sorry, Kaz33, I may be hijacking your thread here. We may also be having to relocate due to dh's new job due to imminent redundancy. At mo we are in N.Cheshire and love it. Really don't want to have to move, but dh has been offered excellent job in CARDIFF. Therefore I was really pleased to see that Judgeflounce and Mishmish are raving about Cardiff. I might be asking about decent areas you two, as I know Cardiff not a jot.

Sorry, though, should have added, North Cheshire is hard to beat. We've been very happily settled here for the last 9 years, though am originally from Yorkshire and there are some lovely areas there too.

Or dogwalkinginwinterwonderland you could always live in Bristol or nearby and dh could commute to Cardiff, it's really not far.

Yes, www, dh has considered that too. Don't know how long it would take to commute. I suppose the point of relocating would be that his commute was quite short, I suppose 30-45 mins max.

Northamptonshire is quite good - close to Birmingham and London airports. 1hr by train to london, lots of good schools, house prices good, lots of things to do as you're quite 'central' Lots of countryside easily accessible.
