What would your dream utility room have in it?

We're re-designing ours at the moment, so would like your ideas on what your ideal utility room would have in it.

So far on my list is:

sink to soak clothes in
washing basket with 3 sections for darks,lights and colours
sheila's maid
iron and ironing board hook
bin for all the crap out of Dh's pockets

anybody got any more ideas?

2 big rectangular sinks side by side - had that in an old house I rented once, great for hand washing as you can have a wash sink and a rinse sink IYKWIM

one of those old fashioned clothes airers that has a pulley that pulls it up to the ceiling

A big freezer

Loads of storage

Washing machine and dryer if room, can't stand washing in the kitchen but I have no choice. Lots of shelves for spare washing powder/dishwasher tabs/muddy wellies etc.

I am having one built at the moment. Had not thought of any of your items! LOL

I am having a washing machine, tumble drier, sink, freezer, broom cupboard, one base cupboard, one set of drawers and a couple of wall cupbaords....

Was planning on keeping the laundry basket upstairs, where we get undressed...

I am liking the idea of some sort of bin though.

Also been vaguely thinking of somewhere to hang a coat and put the kids wellies when they come in from the garden...

I've often thought that washing amchines should be upstairs to save all that tracking up and down with baskets.

A washing and drying machine would be good
one of those overhead things that you can hang clothes on might be useful (with a pulley system to lower it down)
Somewhere for your laundry basket (for taking clothes to hang outside), peg bag, ironing smelly water if you use it
Shelf and socket for a digital radio or ipod docking station (my ironing pile is big enough for light entertainment to be required)

BTW what or who is a sheila's maid ? 'scuse my ignorance.

A sheila's maid is one of those old fashioned ceiling clothes airers.

Ooh, would love a double sink, but don't think we've got room unfortunately.

dont see the point of putting washing baskets in there tbh! wouldnt you have to still have washing baskets upstairs where you take your clothes off?

I don't like having washing baskets in the bedrooms. I take dirty clothes downstairs most mornings and put them in the utility room where they wait to be washed.

I know most people do things the other way round!!

I have wash baskets in the bathroom for when we take our clothes off

And then different ones for carrying the washing from the machine to the line to be hung out

Just thought you would take wet washing from the machine in the utility room to hang it out

But I don't have a well - or even a badly designed utility room - so should not be on this thread!

Our laundry basket is in the family bathroom.

Have a different basket to carry the washing out to the washing line...

What about flooring. As we will use the door as the main entrance to garden for the children in the winter I am thinking tiles - thinking they will be easier to keep clean, tough and hopefully (if we choose correctly) not slippery..

I was thinking of something like this to stand in the utility room permanntly.

a chute from the bedroom to the utility room so dirty clothes go straight into a basket in front of the washing machine!

I saw this once in a design mag - an architect had put one in his own house, (though obviously, in my house, would need to have a child proof lock on it or I fear small children would get shoved down it, amongst other things).

a rail for hanging clothes on hangers when they come out the washing machine/dryer to save on ironing

Lots of cupboard space, an airing cupboard/linen press, ELFA space storage solution shelving/baskets, iron and ironing board with hook, deep Belfast sink and drainer, vented dryer rather than condenser, ceiling airing rack... and a secret compartment about the size of Harry Potters understairs bedroom well stocked with good books and chocolate for me to hide away in when necessary. Well, you did say dream.

But i would like it on the same floor as the bedrooms so i don't have to carry washing up andown stairs.

An old fashioned black and white tiled floor, a double sink, ceiling airer, big window, decent ironing board and iron. Big enough cupboards to store hoover/brooms/dustpans etc and a decent work top. oh, and enough laundry baskets - i never seem to have one to hand when i am doing the washing.
