Ventilating the oven after cleaning?

Castlelough · 26/04/2013 16:42

I cleaned my oven last weekend, and it says on the back of the oven cleaner to 'ventilate' the oven after cleaning.
I presume this means to just leave the door open....? But for how long?!
I had been put off cleaning it because of all the horrible chemicals, and I am still dubious about using it after cleaning it.
Do you turn the oven on without any food in it for a while to 'burn' off any leftover chemicals? Or do you bung in your Sunday roast and not worry about chemicals?
Sorry for such a dull post... Blush

I just open all kitchen windows and leave oven door open. Close kitchen door. I suppose half an hour or so. Just little tip - lay a sheet of tinfoil along the bottom of the oven and replace every so often. Saves a lot of oven cleaning. Put the trays in a black bag with the spray on to clean then, then dump.

Well, this is what I did!
Even two weeks later the oven smelled of vile oven cleaner and I was afraid to cook anything in it (and yes I had washed it out after cleaning and left the oven door open for AGES!).

I got a bowl of warm soapy water (washing up liquid) and washed it out a few times, and it started to smell better. Then I turned it on to the hottest temp for twenty mins (with nothing in). The vile chemical smell had disappeared! Hooray!
Popped in my pizza and all was good! Grin

I always turn it on afterwards with no food in and then open the door. Often it takes a few extra wipes with the sponge to get rid of the smell.

I did mine at the weekend as it goes. I used the bag for the racks and the rest went into the Petrie dish just left the door open over night. Ran it for an hour, bit of a whiff but nothing major.
