Is this hideous?

Help me please oh arty ones. Is this hideous? Or understatedly beautiful? It's a tenner in a local charity shop. Some kind of wood veneer but I think real wood underneath, and inside is real wood. With the mirror removed would it make a beautiful hall console/sideboard type thing or am I peeing in the wind?
I shall repeat that it's a tenner. Plus tenner delivery. So if it's truly hideous, I can just gumtree it and make my money back, no?
It's done something to my heart and I can't stop thinking about it......

Have a look at the back and in the back of the cupboards, can you see any names or labels?

Nice

Ah, cross post! It's not valuable, but it's a mass market version of a similar G-plan (I think?) unit. I'd buy it if it's in good nick. It's unlikely to be wood underneath though if it's Schreiber.

It's not on immaculate condition hence the price. A few nicks on the corners, but there appears to be wood underneath- but obviously mdf type then rather than real wood?
Is it paintable do you think? I'm thinking inky blue?
Ohhhhh I don't know what to do! Dh will hate it!

Schreiber was/is a good make! Was in IKEA at the weekend and there was something similar! If you can ponce it up, and take the mirror off, I'd say it's a bargain!

Get it! It's a tenner, what have you got to lose?

I have nearly the exact same one. It's not as nice as the solid wood gplan ones, but we needed something to put the tv on and a small budget!
We have to keep the top drawer slightly open, other wise the small people like to open the doors.

There's a shop near us that does these up and sells them at hugely inflated prices.

They paint them, often in more than one colour and then cover some of the doors/drawers in different patterned and coloured wallpaper (I presume). Difficult to explain but they look great.

A bit like the one in the photo but using patterned paper in the same colour scheme too.

Glad you bought it, it's lovely.

As an aside, did you know your baby is reflected in the mirror? Wasn't sure if you'd want to be identifiable. What a gorgeous face though!

Congratulations! It looks fab. There is a FB group full of people who love this sort of thing. You might be able to get advice on how to tidy it up, or even sell it if you decide you can't keep it. Retro furniture FB group

Isn't it called retro now?

I still have a Schreiber wardrobe, chest of drawers and dressing table from when I was 13, ahem 35 years ago, and they are still in good nick. Me, not so much Grin

LonnyVonny, you seem pretty knowledgable about this stuff, I have a mid century sideboard I picked up from a local furniture place for £65 by Morris of Glasgow.

I'm presuming the valuable brands are things like G Plan, Ercol etc, but do you know anything about Morris?

OP I like it, but then I'm a sucker for this style of furniture.

I bought this mid century lamp the other day. Couldn't afford it at all, but..well you know....

Love that Dave - and the pink phone!
I've just ordered some dark teal blue paint from annie Sloan - hoping it's as easy as it says it is! I'd love to do something like this photo,
Think I may have found my new hobby!!

Oooh Dave you have lovely taste! That sideboard is lovely. We only moved to this house 4 years ago and have been doing work/carpeting/sofaing - all the boring stuff. But it's a 70s house and now I'm looking to start getting some mid-century stuff, so I'm trying to educate myself a little.

Morris of Glasgow is still going! They mainly do office furniture now but there was a time when they were 'the last word'. Their stuff is reasonably rare - you've got a bargain there. A couple of stores I follow on facebook and the like make a big deal out of Morris stuff, it's not quite in the same price or desirability as G plan, but usually well made and as I say, not all that common. Good find!
