Colonoscopy tomorrow - moviprep not working

Hi everyone, I’m having a colonoscopy tomorrow afternoon and started the prep this evening as told by the letter I received, I started drinking the first litre at 7pm finishing it at 8.30 and haven’t had any bowel movements yet.

I was wondering if anyone who’s had one done could tell me if this is normal or not, next lot is tomorrow morning, I’m having bad stomach cramps and awful bloating so hopefully it starts working soon.

Totally normal!
I've had several colonoscopies with Movieprep and the first jug does nothing. (and I always worry) Then some hours later...usually half way through the second jug it begins.... I usually take the second jug not long after the first.. gets it going and after a bad night I'm all clean.

Just keep going.. it WILL work!

I'm having colonoscopy tomorrow too.
I didn't do the whole drink 250ml every half hour. I drank a pint at 6pm and the second pint at 6:15pm.
Went to toilet about 7:15pm and it was fairly constant until 8:30pm then stopped.
Second sachet tomorrow morning! Yum! NOT!

Thank you so much for your reply @StillMedusa , wasn’t sure what to expect as it’s my first colonoscopy, so you’re reply is reassuring. I’m supposed to take the next sachets at 6am, as my appointment isn’t till 2pm, would you suggest I take it earlier, it’s all quite confusing to me

It will probably start working soon. I had citrafleet (similar) and it took about 3 hours to start working. The second dose tomorrow should clear out more.

I’d take it at 6, otherwise you’ll be shattered! Taking it at 6 for a 2pm appointment should be plenty of time.

Do you want any more detail about the procedure?

@kidsmakesomuchwashing good luck for tomorrow, I hope everything turns out okay for you! It’s foul tasting isn’t it? I struggled to drink the first lot, so not looking forward to the next!

@FaithInfinity My DP had one not so long ago so he’s being telling me what to expect with regard to the actual procedure, but he started going to the loo quite quickly after he started to drink his, so that made me question whether it was working or not for me, but thank you

You might need to drink some more water, I found that helps to clear everything out.
Honestly, the prep is the worst part of the procedure.
Are you going to have sedation?

Hope it worked! Mine didn’t and I have a redo with double Moviprep (and a rough endoscopist) to look forward to! I’m going to supplement it with 5 days low residue diet, 2 days clear liquid diet, 3 days and a water enema. I WILL succeed!!

Hello all. My husband is having a colonoscopy next week. Did you choose to have gas and air or sedation? How did you find the procedure? I think that he is really worried about it, which isn't like him at all. I'd like to give him some reassurance. Any advice? Thank you.

Would recommend sedation if on offer. My father always was told to have the sedation by his GP when I was a teen. I just get clean knocked out.

I found there was a delay of a few hours too then all hell lets loose lol. Its the worst part in my opinion. I took mild sedation for the actual procedure so was able to watch the screen - quite interesting or maybe that was the drugs. Just a bit uncomfortable as they move it round is all .. no more than "ow" for me but I am tough as have many problems.

The sedation is generally offered for a colonoscopy and most people take it. He will need someone with him for 24 hours afterwards though. The sedation physically relaxes the body making the procedure easier, so if he’s nervous, it’s probably a good idea. You’re given painkillers at the start as well as a drug to relax the bowel. Most people can have the gas and air if it’s uncomfortable (there are some reasons you can’t have it like if you’ve had a head injury or trapped air in the body). I found the gas and air really helped when they got stuck on a tight corner.

Now on day 9 (of 10) of my extended bowel prep prior to 2nd attempt at colonoscopy. It’s grim! Double dose moviprep tomorrow. Hope it works this time.

Can anyone tell me how painful theirs was with 1.5-2mg midazolam and a small dose of pethidine? There’s no gas and air top-up where I’m going and the endoscopist goes for speed rather than comfort.

I’ve had four now (family history of bowel cancer) and none of them was painful. Once when the tube went round the bend it was a bit uncomfortable but that’s all.

I am just very grateful that I can be monitored for bowel cancer for free every three years.

I think pain depends to an extent on individual anatomy and how much the scope gets looped up inside. I will report back.

Yes - am grateful this is being done on the NHS.

I'm waiting on my appointment for mine.

Couple questions if that's ok.

1, do you get much sleep after the moviprep or are you up and down like a blue arsed fly every half hour?

2, can you put it in anything to make it more palatable? Does anything make it more palatable?
