my dad has prostate cancer, and hates his current consultant, for reasons that I will detail in a later post. He is currently being treated at DOncaster, and is waiting for his CAT scan to see if it has spread to bones and all that. We would like his treatment to be transferred to weston park in sheffield, as it is a specialist cancer hospital. They are not going to ask for a transfer until after the scan as there have been some really appalling delays in his diagnosis already (for a later post too)

WHo should he ask for this to happen? WIll it delay treatment? Their GPs practice is a bit shite (may even now be run by private american company), can he ask the consultant to transfer him?

When should he ask?

HELP

sorry if long

See if you can find out the names of consultant urologists at Weston Park. I think you can ask the Consultant directly to refer you on for 2nd opinion, and copy in your request to the Hospital he is having treatment at.

I should add that he only found out on Monday that he has cancer, so there is no treatment yet, just waiting for cat scan

Guessing that he will have anappointment with consultant after his scan to get the results?

If so I would ask then.

Why does he want to change?

He HATES his consultant.

The consultant has pissed him around for 6 months

They would rather be at a specialist cancer hospital, as he has cancer

When he got the blood test he was told the results could be an infection. Take ABs and come back in 3 weeks

I have no experience of how cancer referrals work, but I asked to be transferred to another hospital when I had ds2. Was automatically allocated to Shrewsbury but asked to be changed to Chester, which was out of county, and was referred via GP letter.

I'd ask GP to make the referral. I'd also ring Weston Park to ask what the waiting lists are like - it could be that your dad has been referred to Doncaster as the waiting time is shorter.

HTH, and good luck.

the blood test showed that he may well have prostate cancer. They tried to do a biopsy (after 2 weeks again), and he clenched. They said that they could only do it under general. But then decided that his blood pressure was too high

So they put him on outdated drugs that did nothing for his blood pressure for weeks and weeks, and only after him loosing his temper and my mum appologising for him, they agreed to do a biopsy under general, and on Monday I found out that my bad tempered git of a dad has cancer. He has waited SOOOOOO long to get the diagnosis, so we would like his treatment transferred asap.

I say again

i'm not sure of the mechanism for getting a transfer, but it should be possible. this might help?. Just phone the preferred hospital and ask if it has a patient liaison services dept, then ask them what to do and explain your concerns. I did this with my mum, we didn't move her in the end because she didn't want it but hmmm i wished we had. hope you get a good result.

I'm sorry that none of us seem able to help you further and that your dad has been messed around so much.

I do wonder if BadHair is right and he is at the hospital he is at because waiting times at his preferred choice are too long.

No - It isn't waiting lists - it is just a bit of random stuff to do with where they live

Thank you all for answering though

Thanks Tnog - bit of a shock, but trying to do practical stuff now - like move him to the best hospital.

Trouble is - If it will delay treatment should we move where he is registered?

I don't know how long it would take to get him seen somewhere else
