i am in the throes of a terrible head cold. nose is streaming and stinging constantly, now bright red and sore.

head feels like its stuffed with cotton wool and my entire face aches. i feel as if i have been punched in the nose. I feel very tired.

i am taking Lemsips (even though i hate them).....and have night nurse for bed. I have no idea what else is out there, if you know of anything better please post it! im desperate!

thank you!

Not symptoms but side effects of a cold - the skin on my nose always ends up dry and flaky from too much blowing, so I slather my nose in vaseline when I have a cold.

Oh and steaming is very good for clearing nasal congestion.

And Vicks - someone said put it on the soles of feet for it to work better

Poor you!

Olbas oil on pillow to breathe in at night. Day Nurse I think is stronger than Lemsip. Nurofen Plus packs a punch for pain but can leave you a bit spaced out quite nice really

Eating home made chicken soup seems to have some scientific basis as a decongestant, and anyway is good, comfort invalid food.

How about those impregnated tissues that stop you getting sore?

See the doc to see if you need abs?

Hope you get better soon.

dd has kindly broken my facial steamer.

i am feeling so crap. i seem to get colds alot despite taking Zinc and Vit C. i also have a weakness of the windpipe so i end up barking like a seal and throat closes up (spasms) if i get a cough. its horrible.

i just wondered if i was missing something that everyone knew about except me....

Tiger balm and or Olbas oil. If you're hard as nails like me you can inhale it directly - clears your nose and brain!
Berocca to replace the vit c

Whisky or whiskey.

Alternate two ibuprofen with two paracetamol every 4 hours.

Vicks Sinex nasal unblocker thingy you stick up your nostril and breathe in on.

Balsam tissues - the ones with the soothing balm. They actually do work and make your nose less sore, surprisingly.

If you don't like lemsip don't take 'em - the paracetamol does the same job.

Me too! I hate colds. I feel really rubbish and ache all over.

Cold & Flu type sachets at bedtime help me sleep.

Garlic (fresh) - make garlic butter & have it on toast.

Tis antiseptic & un-stuffs you.

A cut clove of garlic on a mouth ulcer is a good cure too.

Get your DP/DH to have some too otherwise you'll be a pariah!

Take loads of vitamin C, about 1g (1000mg) every 8 hours.
Also, if it descends to your throat, gargle with soluble aspirin

also try watch video from about 6 minutes.

the practitioner says do it gently, but I find massaging your sinuses and especially the tops of your cheeks (under the eye sockets) really gets all the gunk flowing out of your system.

Also make sure you have plenty of fluids, water to flush it all out.

get well soon

Bed rest
Heating on to the point of discomfort
Lots of clothes on in bed, to the point of even moe discomfort
Lots and lots of hot fluids and ideally a commode
Ibuprofen and paracetamol - max dose allowed (but remembering lemsip has paracetamol)
Absolute minimal activity

I realise this is a purely theoretical option for many, especially parents.

I take Echinacea at the first sign of a cold. I seem to get over the cold quite quickly.

I never take any of the cold or flu remedies - they just seem to prolong things.

Despite using public transport every day - I get relatively few colds. I put this down to the fact I wear gloves a lot (I have Raynauds). Perhaps that's the answer - act like the Queen and wear gloves Grin

Oh instead of a steamer fill the bathroom sink with v hot water & some eucalyptus & lavender essential oil, bend over it with a bath towel over your head.

Eucalyptus is a decongestant & lavender relaxes you so you sleep.

Also a tissue beside your pillow with a good few drops of eucalyptus means you stay clear all night - but you will wake up with a rotten taste in your mouth so have some juice ready!

Otrivine, whisky, fisherman's friends are all good.

Plus apparently if you put vicks on your feet under socks before sleep you don't cough? Pretty sure I heard that on here.

But Envy that you get night nurse - I'm on a 6 week painkiller ban and can't have so much as a paracetamol - even with the shocking cold I had last week. Grr.

A really hot curry always gets me breathing, plus it's about the only thing I can taste when bunged up!

Hot toddy with soluble aspirin. Otravine for the blocked nose. Nitenurse - self explanatory! Lots and lots and lots of water (to replace all the snot you blow out) TMI!! But it's true. I feel your pain. I too, am a believer in garlic and Berocca.

A mdicinal hot toddy of some sort usually sorts me out.

Get some lemsip max to drink and ibuprofen alongside it, eat those menthol lockets and airwaves gum. Drink some berocca and lots of coca cola. Use olbus oil tissues to wipe your nose.

It does seem overkill, but having done the above it got me through work and my last bad cold.

It is also a known cure if someone brings you a cup of tea. Wink

Oh yy, sucking on a Fisherman's Friend will usually do the trick.
