Spotting for 6 days before period...

IawnCont · 25/06/2012 11:53

Why is this happening?
I have a regular 28-day cycle. Always been this way. We're ttc DC3 for 3 months. But these last two months, I've had light spotting for 5-6 days before period is due, and then period starts on time, and is normal.
This has never happened before.
Any ideas?

Are you sure you can't be pregnant? Implantation can sometimes cause spotting. But if it's happened before, I am not sure. I sometimes get a light pinkish colour a few days before my period. But that's normal for me. If in doubt, see your gp

Have you done a pregnancy test, Iawn?

What colour is the spotting? Have you had any other symptoms?

Spotting is pinky red. Don't think I'm up the duff as I had a completely normal period after the spotting (it was as if the period took ages to start properly IYKWIM) and I've not bled in either of my other pregnancies.
Thanks for replying.

I get brown spotting before my period for about a week and have done now for a few years. It's a nuisance as obviously my period lasts longer. I suffer from endometriosis though so think this is the cause.

How old are you? I'm 44 and have had this since the start of my forties so have also put it down to age and changes in hormones.

I'm 29. It's quite odd to go from being so regular to this. Will make an appointment to see GP, as I think the advice is to go if there's any change in bleeding.

Yes I would see your GP to help put your mind at rest.

I had this and lots of others on the conception board also do, it is worrying because you think it might affect an embryo's ability to implant successfully. Taking B vitamins helped stop this for me (and anecdotally for others) and thhe month I got pregnant I had no spotting before AF. Good luck.
Just to warn you, a lot of GPs are fairly clueless about fertility realted stuff and many dismiss spotting as not a problem.

Iawn, I think it's a good idea to see your GP if you're at all worried.

I really hope that what I am going to say next doesn't worry you unduly, but it's the reason why I think you should POAS/ see your GP and put your mind at rest a little...

I had similar spotting followed by what seemed like normal periods when I had an ectopic pregnancy. That's why I didn't know I was "pregnant" until it ruptured.

Hope all is ok with you x

Thanks for the info, everyone. And thank you for being honest Lula. It's a good think you said because I will certainly make an appt to see GP tomorrow, and that can't be bad.
Hope you're okay- That sounds very traumatic.

I'm fine thanks, hon. This happened over a year ago and was traumatic at the time, but hey, at least it means me and Mr Palooza can conceive!

I have had this for about a year. Def not pg and I've had an internal ultrasound for them to have a look if anything was wrong, and they still couldn't see anything.

Normal smear too.

It is v annoying as you said as your period lasts about 2 weeks of the month - its a bit too light for a tampon but too heavy for nothing/pantyliners....so frustrating.

Which b vitamins were recommended?

Hi all, I know this board is very old however I am having the same issues and wondering if anybody has any answers? Since a miscarriage 7 months ago I also have a spotting/light bleed for approx 6 days before my period. It's light bleed, bbt stays high and then full af starts. The doc referred me to the hospital for fertility tests but my appointment on NHS keeps being cancelled. Any feedback on somebody who got answers from this? Thanks

I sometimes get it and put it down to stress as I get spotting during a particularly stressful month. If you are TTC, TRY Angus Castus (Holland and Barratt) to help regularise your periods.

Thanks VioletHornswaggle, I haven't heard of Angus Castus so will certainly give that a try next month...and work on the stress levels to see if it helps.

Wow this is the most recent threat I have seen!
I too spot a week before my period and it’s so annoying . I went to the doctor and she said I had cervical everison or something but I don’t think I do as that’s random spotting . This isn’t random always a week before I come on! And so annoying !
I’ve had reflexology and been taking Angus cactus .
I am not sure if it’s low progesterone . But it’s really stressing me out :( which probably doesn’t help!

Hello... I too am a spotter : ( also TTC.

I'm 37, never been pregnant. Was on the pill since my early twenties and developed brown spotting for 2-3 days for the last 5 years or so whilst taking the pill, the spotting always occurred at the same time each month. GP told me not to worry about it and that it's normal.

However I have now been off the pill for 7 months, TTC. The spotting has continued and is now more prolonged. I spot for around a week before my period, light brown spotting, occasionally bright red.
I have had a pelvic ultrasound which was normal, hormone profile was normal and showed I was ovulating. I use home ovulation kits and get a LH surge at the same time each month; day 12 of my cycle.

My periods are regular every 28-29 days, although they are light and shorter than they used to be, even when I was on the pill.
I have been to see a Gynaecologist, who has tried to do a pipelle biopsy but wasn't able to get through my cervix (which can be normal so I'm told) . I have had my thyroid function tested which is slightly elevated with my TSH at 4.8 and have been started on a low dose of thyroxine to see if this helps, although your TSH level should be around 2.0 when TTC anyway.
I have only been taking the thyroxine for 2 weeks but I have started my spotting on cue today - day 22 of my cycle! It's always the same time each month, I can set my clock by it!
My GP isn't concerned, my Gynaecologist is more worried about it, and thinks if I haven't conceived within the next 6 months then I'd need to look into fertility treatment as its also likely that I would have poor ovarian reserve at my age!

Would love to hear of anyone going through similar experiences and if you were able to resolve it and get pregnant.

Many Thanks : )

Ahh someone replied recently ! Yay. I feel like I’m alone and going crazy. I’m glad I’m not . I have a 2 yo. But I never spotted before her . So I don’t get why I am now . So my last cycle was strange I started spotting a whole week before (like usual ) but then 3 days before I came on it completely stopped - but then I still got AF! Booo. But I guess that’s progress . Have you looked into Angus cactus ?
It will be my second month on it . Maybe that helped me . It’s so stressful isn’t it . I want to know if people still get their spotting when they fall pregnant . And also how do you work out your LP? Do you count the spotting for the first day . Is that why the egg isn’t sticking as your womb starts to shred when you start spotting . It’s so confusing . I’m getting my blood results today so we will see . I wish you luck and baby dust xx

I had this for ages, usually three or four days, but sometimes a week of spotting before my period started. I was worried about it affecting my fertility as I'd read it was related to low progesterone, but I got pregnant the first month of trying.

Weirdly, I didn't have any spotting the month I got pregnant, don't know if we were lucky to catch a good cycle or whether the higher levels of progesterone in early pregnancy prevented it.

I seem to be having the same problem with spotting. We’ve been trying for a second baby for 6 months and my cycles are getting more out of whack as time goes on. Twice I have spotted a week before my period. One cycle was much longer then the rest. I suspect I have conceived a couple of times and it’s gone wrong, though I can’t confirm for sure. I suffer from hashimotos (post pregnancy) which is being treated, but I recently discovered that ideally, tsh levels should be between 1 & 2 and mine are 2.9 so now taking more thyroxine. Will take about 2 months to kick in, so fingers crossed it fixes the spotting and irregular cycles, I’ve done a lot of reading that suggests low thyroid levels can have a knock on affect for progesterone levels, which can cause early spotting or a short luteal phase, which can hamper the egg implanting. I haven’t spoken to my doctor as they generally seem quite clueless, but if I’m not pregnant by the end of the year I think I may have to pay them a visit and have some more tests. Didn’t think it would be this complicated second time round!

I should add that my specialist prescribed me the extra thyroxine but I haven’t spoken to a doctor about my low progesterone theory. I think it’s definitely worth doing a bit of research before you see the doctor, just so they can’t fob you off with, ‘oh that’s normal’.

Interestingly enough on the cycle we didn’t try, I only spotted one day before my period, it’s all very confusing and frustrating!

I'm having abit of a situation, this is abit tmi.
So I Ovulated at some point between 3rd and 6th July I don't tend to keep much track of my cycles. However, for the first ten ever, I had brown spotting for abit 3 days no cramping, nothing. Then it turned red for about 4 days but I had slight niggly pains and a tugging sensation, It was barely worth wearing a tampon or a pad for but to save embarrassment I did anyway.. Period was due two days ago and nothing. My lower back is absolutely killing me, I'm constantly hungry and feel like I could sleep for a week but I can't actually sleep when it's time to go to bed. I'm having ridiculously vivid dreams aswell. Saw my gp last week and he said it's one of three things, an infection which has been ruled out, I'm pregnant which a test said negative 4 days ago (first response) or it's just one of those things. Now it's not normal for me to have this and I haven't been on any contraception for over a year.. Has anyone had this happen to them or can anyone shed any light?! I'm going out of my mind...
