Is anyone else literally ill when they are tired?

Mousey84 · 30/09/2011 16:09

Im not overly sleep deprived - normally 7-8 hours sleep a night, but I do get overwhelmingly tired and if I dont nap for even 10 mins, Ill be physically sick.
Tiredness starting to hit now, so despite dd just being home from school, I need to go to sleep.
I know its not "normal" but is it reasonably common? Ive had it for about 4 years.

Have you been checked over by a dr? Sounds like you should be, to rule out anaemia, thyroid issues and the like?

I'm not sick when tired. Just wondered do you get tired easily, or out of breath?
Have you had any blood tests done? Or been to see GP?

Ive been to drs about this, and another issue (see below) and they did a full blood picture and told me to write a food diary, which I did, they looked at it and said,"oh, that looks good..hmm..maybe you just need more sleep then." Bloods were fine.

Other issue, not really related I dont think, is a dull heavy pain in the place where ribcage come up in the middle of your chest. I was on omeprazole and something else similar as they were insisting it was heartburn, though I was adamant it was not. And it only happens between 8-9pm til 2-3 am. And not every night - sometimes not for months and then maybe have it 3 times in one month. Ive had it every night for the last week. Never had it during the day, and no correlation between pains and food or exercise. This pain does cause lack of sleep though, which leads to me being very very ill the next day.

Three drs have seen me and done further, more specific blood tests (cant remember what they were all for) but all normal.

I dont get tired or out of breath that easily Autumn. Like, not when climbing stairs or anything, but would be a little breathless after I walk in the mornings (treadmill for 45 mins at 5.7km per hr, so pretty fast) but I think thats normal.

i naturally need about 10 hours. however, the world only seems to allow about 7-8hrs a night for adults which i can survive on but yes, i do get so tired i can't eat as feel nauseaus and i get headaches. an hour's nap and occassional lie in is necessary to recover.

on holiday without children, when walking/skiing or otherwise outside and exercising i'll naturally sleep without an alarm from 10pm to 8am.

I do and always have, i get a slight all over headache....my muscles feel like jelly and i feel like i am going to be physically sick. It's such a horrible feeling. Like having flu i suppose. I got it more when pregnant and i get it about once a month now. It happens mainly in the evening or very late afternoon. I just have to sleep....and i feel so much better for it the next day. Just nature's way of telling you that you need a bit more rest/sleep my doctor has always said. I've all sorts of blood tests to rule anything out and all come back fine.

I only need to go to bed / wake up at the same time for 2-3 days in a row and my body clock adjusts, and I can wake up just before alarm clock (unless ive been in pain and awake til 3am). I dont know my natural sleep pattern, but I know Id def be a night owl if I could always sleep later in the morning.

Oh just re-read and see your getting it daily, you should have tests done just to rule anything out. Maybe a hi energy snack mid afternoon for a boost?

You are quite right to get properly checked out.

But I do think some people have a lower physical tolerance for being tired than others do. If I get too tired I simply cannot function. I go all grey and vomit and pass out or burst into tears.

fairies - I have had tests done and they were all fine. Ive tried high energy stuff, increasing fruit and veg, lowering carbs, having more carbs, cutting out things like caffeine and sugar (in case it was a low after I had too much of it) etc.

Riven - I take it you havent found anything that will ease it? How much sleep do you get?

Mousey - what you have described re the pain in the centre of the chest - I have exactly the same thing and was prescribed omazoprole - it didn't work - I then had an ultrasound and I have gallstones.

Your tiredness also sounds like me - in fact are you me?? I found out that my ferritin was v v low even though my haemoglobin was normal.

Hope this helps!!

Gallstones?! But wouldnt you have pain all the time then? Mine has been coming and going for ages. I think first occurrence was probably about 5 years ago. I have had pain every evening this week (though thankfully not tonight!) but apart from that, I havent had it since June, when it was only one night.

Ill ask about ferritin when I go in for wellwoman clinic next week and maybe up my meat intake again in the meantime- couldnt bear to eat more green leafy veg than I already do!

Thanks v much rosy!

Gall bladder pain comes and goes and attacks are evening/night times. It does seem to have a familial link, my DH, my sister, grandmother, DH's aunt have all had it, my poor kids are pretty likely to get it.

DH's pain was central too, he was on lanzosperole (sp) for ages before they decided it was his gall bladder, had pains for at least 2/3 years on and off before they did the op. Pain was always eve/night until they did the op when it was constant for a fortnight and he got an infection in it, then they took it out.

Oh yikes! None of my family have it, but I guess it doesnt meant I wont be the first in line.

Ive been reading up about it since rosys post and it def seems to fit, so Ill be making an appointment on Monday to go back to Drs, or, if it starts over weekend, Ill go to emergency night dr in local hospital who are generally less rushed (last time he spent 45 mins with me...think he was bored and a bit lonely tbh. lol) Plus it makes sense to go at night when its actually sore.

Rosy, hope now that the drs know the source you are being treated soon. I wouldnt wish that pain on anyone! (Tho a scorching hot almost-burning-the-skin wheat bag does distract for the pain, Ive found...) Sadly it doesnt fix the irritability that it causes.

DH spent many a night in the bath, it was the only thing that brought him any relief. The pain is said to be the only thing worse than labour, ugh must be awful I can't imagine anything WORSE than labour.

Let us know how you get on with the Dr on Monday.

You'll probably find A&E won't do anything at all, they will give you pain relief and an ECG and send you back to your GP to be referred to a consultant. We had 3 trips to A&E in the night with DH, he looked terrible, grey, sweating etc I really thought he was having a heart attack :-(

Report
Mousey84 · 30/09/2011 23:18

Well, my labour was short as I ended up with emergency c section, so I cant comment on labour overall, but certainly the chest pains are worse than labour pains I experienced, and Ive a rather low threshold anyway. I had also thought it was my heart because of where the pain was, and sort of radiating across my chest and back on the worse nights.

No pain relief has worked - Ive been give something like co-codeine? and kpake both of which I was told was the best he could do. kpake did knock me out tho, and I only took half the recommended dose! Now I just stick with heat pads.

Unfortunatley, calling on Monday to get an appointment may mean waiting 2 weeks to actually be seen, but I will certainly report back when I find out anything :)

Thanks everyone

2 weeks to be seen, what a joke, we ring in the morning and get seen the same day. Good luck hope you don't have to wait too long. I asked DH about the pain, he said the best way of describing what he felt was a gnawing pain, I'm pretty sure he took tramadol which is good at sending you to sleep, its a prescription med though so maybe your GP can give you a script when you eventually get to see him.

Im a lone parent, so cant be knocked out by tablets for my chocolate stash DDs sake, plus I work with kids, so being groggy the next day wouldnt be safe!

We live in an area with around 10,000, mostly elderly, relying on one dr surgery so wait is long and since pain is at night only, I cant be seen as emergency high-pain patient. Til this thread, I was just accepting that it was something Id just have to deal with possibly for rest of my life! Will def be pursuing it now though.

If my DD gets tired she will faint and /or be sick. She just knows she MUST get enough sleep (age 12).

Rtaher dull update - Was at drs today and apparently based on my food diary its extremely unlikely to be gallstones. Its stress, of which the tiredness is another symptom. Didnt really matter that I had 11 hours sleep last night (plus a 1/2 hr sleep at 7pm) and yet still yawning and pale at the apt at 11.15 this morning. Solution? Sleep more. Gee - thanks dr! I asked to be referred and was basically told that it would be a waste of resources. Walked out and straight to reception and made another appointment with a different dr.

Thankfully pain is away for now, but will be straight to hospital if it starts. Ill happily sit for 6 hrs to get scan if need be.
