take a cutting from an ancient Pieris - or is it easier just to by a new a baby one for £6.99 at Hayes Garden Centre

really tho - I'd like to try myself but haven't the foggiest how to go about it - all I know is you cut on a slant!(?). You seem quite knowledgeable in gardening matters so you're my first port of call

Not Hub2Dee, but I know a bit about plants ...

You can take a cutting from a pieris, the cutting needs to be about 4 - 5 inches long, at a slant if you want to but not necessarily. Stick it in a pot of general compost, water well, cover the pot with a propogator, bottom of a plastic bottle, or plastic bag, put it somewhere warm and light and keep it moist. You can use rooting hormone powder on the cutting but you don't need to.

Should start to take root within about 6 weeks.

Wiggy - excellent - thankyou very much, that's very clear and concise! - didn't know you were green fingered as well as a master of quotations

Can the cutting be from anywhere on the plant - or is a newish bit best? (sorry if I sound thick but I am clueless in the garden!)

As far as I know, it doesn't matter. Probably would be better to use some newish growth.

WWB deffo knows more than me.

If you take the cutting from the North East corner of the plant, you will be forever blessed with wealth.

Feng Shui and washing machines, me.

(joke).

WWB: Syngo landed ?

Syngo definitely landed, thank you so much.

I was so chuffed with it, I even posted about it here ...

I saw too late ! (I spend most of my time in my tiny uinverse of Threads I'm on. Keeps me busy enough usually).

Did the wire idea backfire ? I was trying to prevent the pot turning upsdie down and crushing all the stems with its weight.... I could see when I was threading it it might have somewhat divided the central clump... does it look OK or sh*t ? Be honest.

WigWamBam · 10/05/2005 17:13

No, it's great, the wire worked really well (although I didn't notice it at first and couldn't work out why you seemed to have glued it into the bottom of the bottle ... I have these moments). It had a bit of compost on the stems where the postman hadn't been too careful with it and the package was a bit wet (luckily the postman's uniform will dry ) but it's travelled really well.

Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!

You must let me pay for it though, even if it's just the postage and packaging.

After I dropped it into the bottle I was wondering how you might get it out !

Anyway, glad you like it. It certainly is a crazy looking plant.

I love it. My dd is very excited by it too, and got quite confused when I started to attack the bottle to get it out ("Mummy, it's easy, just take the top off and pull it out through there!!").

Are you sure about the money?

Oh, I see ... my technique's not good enough for you, hey, Jools?

hub2dee · 10/05/2005 18:10

Hi JoolsToo, really I know nothing about propagation outside the bedroom.

You may want to buy another anyway as repeated plants in the garden tends to add structure and looks better (usually) than just a bunch of different ones... but plantaholics will disagree !

it definitely IS wwb! (I've heard about your 'technique' before )

my glorious pieris is at my old address where GDG now lives so I'll have to wait till my next visit and I shall be following your instructions to the letter

She's a hussy, eh... JoolsToo...

WWB: Maybe you could write some bodice rippers / historical romances / Mills and Boon type stuff ? Not pretending it's highbrow, but it seems to be a popular genre and pays OK ! Have you a book already written (in manuscript) or is it something you'd ever consider ? Reckon you'd be good at it.

WigWamBam · 10/05/2005 22:00

I'm shocked that you should think I'm a hussy. I'm a good girl, I am

Bodice rippers, indeed. Someone of my innocence wouldn't know where to start.

I did have a short story published once, in a women's magazine, won their short story competition, but that was a very long time ago, when I still had a brain and could remember how to use it.

What year, What magazine, Were there any guidelines for topic, Can you post a link to the text, Do you still continue to write ? Maybe it would be a really good thing for you to do, Toadie.

Oh, it was a slightly sci-fi, slightly moralistic tale, although in my defence I was only in my 20s . Young couple go to intergalactic travel agency, can't get to Jupiter so go holidaying on the cheap to beautiful planet, destroyed by wars and famine, now recovered but ininhabited (Gaia principle, doncha know) ... naturally, it's earth ...
