A few to get your teeth into here. All in pots left by the previous owners.

No 2 looks like a strawberry and a twig.

No 4... an azalea?

Report
RatherBeRiding · 15/05/2019 13:36

Agree azalea no. 4. No. 1 looks like some sort of hazel?

Report
RatherBeRiding · 15/05/2019 13:36

Sorry - meant no. 2 looks like hazel leaves

Report
RatherBeRiding · 15/05/2019 13:38

No. 1 looks rather like a cotoneaster I have outside my window?

Report
drspouse · 15/05/2019 13:40

No 2 could be hazel - there may be a stray strawberry plant in there but the scale of the leaves is much bigger than strawberries. Don't hazels have straight branches/twigs though?

No 4 does look like the leaves of azaleas - it has some buds but they haven't come out yet.

No 1 is the one with the football, no?

Cotoneaster is much smaller with tiny leaves and red berries, isn't it? We do have some but that's not the same at all.

No. 4 isn't an Azalea, it looks more like a Choisya ternata, especially if it is starting to bod up.

Report
drspouse · 15/05/2019 13:51

I can't remember what colour the flowers are but the buds do look like that.

Oops! BUD not bod!

Anyone else? I realise no 2 is not very helpful but it's a bit lopsided anyway.

No. 2 is a corkscrew hazel.

drspouse · 15/05/2019 15:23

Oh that's interesting! I don't remember seeing any catkins but maybe it's just been too small/poorly.

Number 3 isn't some kind of fatsia, is it?

Report
drspouse · 15/05/2019 17:22

I think I'll need to wait for the leaves to be bigger to be sure - they don't look like what I get when I google Fatsia.

It was the only thing I could think of with big, glossy leaves BlushGrin But they are usually palmate tbh. Looking at the picture again, though, those might not even be the plant of unknown provenance - but it looks like a honeysuckle in behind, anyway.

You'll have some interesting surprises when everything blooms/grows anyway!

Does no 1 smell lemony? It looks like a verbena tree/bush I had when I lived overseas if so...

2 is a corkscrew/contorted hazel, for sure - very nice
4 I know but can't place .... it's a sensible/indestructible type shrub .....
3 looks like nothing I've ever seen!

Report
drspouse · 15/05/2019 19:11

Yes the one on the wall is a honeysuckle as I know from having chopped an acre of the bugger down.

I don't think no 1 is lemony but I'll have a sniff.

Could 3 be Lords and Ladies self seeded weed?

Report
poppet31 · 15/05/2019 22:04

There is a free app you can download called seek where you upload a photo and it identifies the species. It has been fairly accurate for me.

Possible - it doesn't look all that deliberate.

The flowers on the pictures of no 3 look lovely so I'm hoping you're right! Looking forward to seeing if it flowers.

I have moved the possible Chatham Island Forget-me-not to a different spot where it won't be shaded by the other two, to see if it encourages it to flower.

The others have a bit more room in themselves so I'll see how they go and if I want to keep them!
