Something that looks nice in November?

Now I have my forever garden, I would like to plant something in memory of my first DS, who lived only briefly in November 05.

What kind of shrub would be looking nice at that time of year? Is doesn't necessarily have to be flowering, as looking gloriously autumnal in leaf would be just as appropriate.

Any ideas welcome.

How much space do you have? American Oaks are spectacular in late autumn with bright red leaves. Very big trees though.

Somewhat smaller, Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles' is very pretty and starts flowering in November.

There are autumn flowering camellias which can be grown in pots if you don't have the right soil. I bought one for my neighbour a couple of year's ago from here and her Gardener said the other day that she's delighted with it so it must be flowering now.

Mahonia Japonica?
You can prune it to be a very pretty little flowering tree- I saw one pruned that way in a little hospital courtyard garden in November: it was very cheering.

Callicarpa is a lovely shrub in the winter. The leaves fall off and it's covered in purple berries. I saw one in someones garden while out dog walking. I managed to track it down and I put one in my front garden and get lots of compliments. It grows to about 3 metres high

Maybe top big (although some variants are smaller) but I'd go for
Amelanchier lamarckii. Fantastic orange red, berries for birds and glorious blossom late spring. A very positive plant which seems like a fitting memorial.

The callicarpa sounds lovely, just need to know if I can find a spot for it. I'm having a love-in with camellias at the moment, I didn't know you can get autumn flowering ones too. Decisions, decisions...

How about a whole corner of the garden, with underplanted autumn crocus and cyclamen.
Is such a lovely idea.
