What do your children have for breakfast and why?

So, I was watching that C4 Dispatches programmme last night about all the salt and sugar in breakfast cereals and it made me wonder what people give their DCs for breakfast...

My DD has always had porridge, and I thought that was pretty standard, but talking to various friends, it appears that we are quite unusual.

Weetabix, with milk, sometimes banana and also with some honey - yes it is sugar but I figure it has to be a lot less than you get in many cereals and it makes it so much easier to get it eaten

Cereals or porridge if I can be bothered to make it.
DH makes it better than me apparently so if I am feeling brave I will give it a go.
Or toast,

DS usually has a fried egg and a slice of toast cut up which he just dips in the yolk of the egg. Never actually eats the egg.

Failing that sometimes a toasted sandwich or cereal. He hates porridge unfortunately. Does like weetabix but only with sugar.

if we're in a rsuh I just stop at the local garage and get a snickers and a yazoo, I figur this provides him with calcium and protein and plenty of energy in the form of simple easy to absorb carbohydrates.

Readybrek with fruit. He'll have weetabix once in a while, but Readybrek is a firm favourite, which is fine with me.

I saw that programme last night and I was a bit surprised at the mum's attitude that she'd never really considered what she gave her kids for breakfast. And that porridge she made looked horrible - all stiff and lumpy! Not surprised her kids didn't like porridge if that's how she made it.

I should add that we have a little bit of honey with the porridge...

Evaangel2 - isn't your DS really hungry within 30 min of having just having yoghurt and juice for breakfast??

OK. So I was probably sounding a bit smug about the whole porridge thing, and overmydeadbody is bringing me down a few notches...

I can take it !!

Cereal and toast. DD usually has weetabix but DS sometimes has Cheerios, Coco Pops etc.

Most of the time DS has cereal (either weetabix, shreaded Wheat, shreddies or a mix of bran flakes and corn flakes) with either a chopped up banana on top or a grated apple on tom, and green milk.

We go through phases of making porrige for breakfast, and I always add a pinch of salt while cooking it and DS has honey on top.

I don't care what anyone says, there's nothing wrong with a bit of salt.

Good!

Smugness is not ever a good thing. Most people care about what they feed their DCs and take the view of 'everythgin in moderation'.

Try to alternate so they don't have the same everyday, at the moment it's between these three:

Readybrek with banana and honey
Weetabix with raisins and hot milk
Plum baby muesli with toast

All with a glass of orange juice

(oh and usually poached eggs on toast on Sundays)

The plum baby muesli is lovely but so expensive for such a small box. I want to start making my own muesli.

He is not a big eater in the morning but he prefers a hot lunch by 12, he has about 3 or 4 yoghurt pots with his orange, I tried weetabix last week and he cried, he wont look at any type of cereal

DD eats all sorts of things for breakfast. Sausages, bacon, toast, pancakes with choc spread, yoghurts, crumpets etc etc.

She might make herself a fruit salad if she's feeling healthy, on the other hand she might have a bacon and egg scooby snack!

As long as she doesn't have scooby snacks everyday, I don't mind what she eats.

Cereal. Always an oatibix in the bottom of the bowl, and then a choice of something more sugary on the top. Current favourite is Special K red berries for some reason. And some fruit on top, usually rapsberries. Sometimes stewed apple.

Whatever i can get down them.

occassionally cereals and toast. more likely fruit, cereal bars, yoghurts, and yes, biscuits if we are running late!

i make sure they have at least 5 fruit and veg a day, so dont panic if there breakfast isnt always PERFECT!
