Is it ok for my 13 month old to regularly eat wholemeal bread?

I've been told that I shouldn't give my baby wholemeal bread, only white. Does anybody know if this is true? I've tried her with white and she doesn't like it!

If you haven't noticed any ill-effects then carry on. At 13 months her gut should be able to cope, but the 'lighter' wholemeals would be a better idea at this stage in her development.

My 15 month old only regularly gets brown, wholemeal and preferably multigrain bread!

I hope it's ok, vbecause I'm not keen on white.

Who told you not to? Babies shouldn't have cereals like all-bran, or low-fat products, but there's nothing wrong with wholemeal bread. It's all that was available hundred of years ago!

never heard that-dd always gets wholemeal and always has done. what's the problem with it?

my ds has always had wholemeal bread...he hates white...it's so much better nutritionally.
Who told you to give her white?

I've heard that too. It's because wholemeal bread will 'fill them up' too much, so they won't eat much else, hence missing out on other vitamins and goodness.

It's advice I choose to ignore though.

I hope it's not true - I have been giving dd wholemeal since she was about 9 months old. I can't stand white bread...

joan, no sign of it filling my dd up too much...she is a bottomless pit...

This is what babycentre says:

High-fibre foods

A high fibre diet is not suitable for babies or young children. Occasional use of wholemeal bread, pasta and grains is fine, but too many of them could fill up your child's tummy, not allowing room for other foods. Do not add bran to your baby's food since it prevents some important minerals from being absorbed. Do offer your child a variety of different starchy foods, including wholegrain varieties, but don't use wholegrain foods exclusively until your child is five years old.

I use a micture of white, wholemeal, Best of Both, etc

my dd is a bottomless pit, too. Plus I'd rather she fill up on a bit of bread, than on the plastic from her bib, which she was happily pulling off with her teeth while I made her tea [big sigh emoticon]!

I can't give DD (22mo) wholemeal anything as it whizzes straight through her She has white bread and lots of hard boiled eggs!

I'm not going to start giving ds white bread on the basis that it is full of crap.

I cater for two bottomless pits too!

I would much rather mine eat better quality bread like wholemeal or seeded, than white rubbish.

If they were eating too much of it and missing out on other food groups, I'd know.

If I remember rightly, Annabel Karmel says 'don't eat wholemeal'in her books whilst the lady who writes for the Times (name escapes me, wrote a food book called Yummy!) says it's perfectly fine and good for lo's to eat wholemeal.

I'm working on the principle that dd may as well get used to what the rest of the family eats. Bread - usually toasted - is still a bit of treat for her, she doesn't have it every day.

There are no split infinitives on this thread, am I missing something?

Thanks everyone. You all pretty much confirmed what I thought so I'll stop worrying about it.
