As you may have seen, we've started posting some recipe videos in this topic on Fridays to give you some inspiration and ideas for the weekend, and this week we've gone for some easy no-bake oat bars.

But what we'd really like is for these videos to feature your own brilliant recipes.

So if you have a recipe that you'd like to share with Mumsnetters (and see it come to life in a video) please comment on this thread with your killer recipe.

Your challenge is:

What's the cheapest meal you can make from scratch for a family of 4-5? Make sure you outline how much each main bit costs (we'll let you off the salt and pepper etc)

We'll pick our favourites to make on camera - and we'll give the poster of the recipe £50 too (subject to our usual T&Cs)

Good luck!

Macaroni cheese with bacon and mixed veg

300g macaroni (30p)
25g butter (20p)
1/4 pint of milk
1 tbsp plain flour
75g cheese (any hard cheese, Cheddar, Red Leicester etc) (approx 60p)
1 tsp Mustard
3 rashers of bacon (50p)
1 clove of garlic (10p)
Frozen broccoli and sweet corn, or any veg that you have available (60p)

  1. Cook the macaroni according to the packet instructions. If using frozen broccoli, add to the macaroni after five minutes.

  2. At the same time, make the cheese sauce. Melt the butter in the microwave, then whisk in the plain flour with a fork. When you have a thick paste, add a splash of milk at a time and heat in the microwave for 30 seconds each time. Gradually add the milk, repeating this process until all the milk is added and you have a thick, but still runny, sauce.

  3. add the mustard and grate the cheese into the sauce. Voila, cheese sauce!

  4. In a frying pan, fry the bacon until it is crisp. Add the garlic and other veg apart from the broccoli to the pan and cook all together.

  5. Drain the macaroni, mix it with the cheese sauce, bacon and veg.

  6. Put the macaroni mixture in an ovenproof dish, top with some additional grated cheese and put under the grill for a couple of minutes until it is golden and crisp on top.

  7. Eat and enjoy!

Cheddar cheese (4oz) (£1 or less)

Chop aubergine (and slice mushrooms) put in pan with large knob of butter or marg and sautee over a low heat.

In a separate pan place washed and halved pearl potatoes, cover in cold water and bring to the boil. (Keep boiling until fork soft).

In a separate pan boil up pan of water. Once boiling add whole pack of pasta (twists or penne) and boil until al dente (cooked but not soft).

Once the aubergine and mushrooms are softened in the butter add the herbs (pinch of salt and pepper and 0.5tsp of paprika if desired)

Once the pasta is al dente, drain and put into bottom of oven dish. Cover with aubergine/mushroom passata sauce and finally the cooked chopped potatoes. Top with grated cheese. Place in warm oven (180deg) for approx10 minutes until cheese melted and potatoes golden.

Lasagne

1 tablespoon Olive oil (about 15p)
680g Minced beef (£4)
1 Onion (diced) (20p)
8 mushrooms (diced) (50p)
2 peppers (diced) (approx 60p) or cheaper when using frozen
2 cloves garlic (diced) (50p) or cheaper when using paste or dried
1 tin tomatoes (28p) basic range
salt, pepper, pinch of Oregano
500 ml Lasagne sauce (£1.80) basic range, or half-price when on offer
10 pasta sheets (40p)
150g grated cheese (50p)

Pre-heat oven to 200C/Gas 6
Saute onion and garlic in olive oil until golden in colour. Add mince and fry for 12 mins. Next add peppers and mushrooms, fry for around 6 mins until soft.
Add tin of tomatoes, Oregano and salt and pepper, leave to simmer. In a large greased ovenproof dish, layer a third of the mix and cover with pasta sheets, then pour a third of white sauce over. Repeat for two more layers. On the third layer sprinkle the grated cheese over the last layer of white sauce.
Bake for 30 minutes. Slice and serve with salad or wedges.

I often buy items when they are on offer, making good savings. When making this dish, I usually make 2 or sometimes 3 meals and freeze remainder until needed.
