Which Supermarket does the best Chinese food?

It's a birthday coming up in our house soon, and a chinese feast has been requested. We don't have a takeaway nearby, but between dh and I our works, we are near to the majority of supermarkets.

Due to food intolerances I don't buy many ready meals, so I haven't had a supermarket chinese for about 10 years, back then I remember Sainsburys and M&S were really good.

Anyone have any preferences? Thanks

Not too sure about the best, but I can certainly recommend you steer clear of Tesco! Not great...

I don't think any supermarket Chinese food is that great to be honest. It just doesn't taste right.

Thanks LittleBear, that's one crossed off.

Sainsbury’s is the best IMO, I only tend to buy ready meals from either Sainsbury’s or M&S and have found Sainsbury’s do the best Asian food and M&S wins Italian.

Thanks Rita, that sounds like a good recommendation

Marks and Spencer. It's good quality and although I'm allergic to Chinese food usually, I'm fine with this.

I've only ever bought chinese food from M&S and Tescos, M&S would be our first choice.

It depends what type of 'Chinese food' you're thinking of. Battered food like spring rolls, sweet and sour chicken, and egg fried rice is fine, but I think anything 'stir fry' or noodles will be disappointing. I don't think it's a type of food that suits being cooked in advance and reheating.

Is there no chance of travelling a bit further to pick up a takeaway or even have a meal in a Chinese restaurant?

I imagine OP found something as this thread was started 4.5 years ago...

I see other people also keep stumbling on zombie threads since the site update Grin

For what it's worth, I highly recommend the Chinese takeaway books by Kwoklynn Wan. I have the veggie version and some friends have the normal version (which includes some veggie recipes). You need a good knife for all the chopping but most of the cooking is about 10 minutes. DH declared the chow mein better than anything he's had in a restaurant.

I know this is a zombie thread but it feels a bit like asking which petrol station has the best flowers.

Just to add that Iceland's Duck spring rolls are divine if anyone is interested 😆
