What's Disturbs You in a Film

I watched a really really grotesque film the other night an then thought about what I'd consider really disturbing in films for me and was interested in hearing about what others find too disturbing to watch, mine are:

Anything relating to animal deaths or animal cruelty
A person being mauled to death by a bear or similar
A women being gang raped
Someone being lashed
Someone being tortured and their spines being cut i.e.: Wolf creek 2
Children being killed
Saddest movies for me are where everyone says goodbye at the end like ET and Free Willy etc.

I'm a huge horror and gore fanatic but these topics make me really feel horrible.

Hardcore movies I've watched were:

The movie I watched the other night - Headless most grossest film ever🤢
Cannibal Holocaust
Battle Royale
A Serbian Film
The Human Centipedes
Hostel movies
I spit on your grave

Really sad ones that I've seen once but never again:

Watership Down
God Bless the Child
Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Homeward Bound
Jock of the Bushveld

Definitely dogs dying. A dog's purpose traumatised me for months.

Land of Mine.

That was a tough watch. Really tough.

People being terrified - the scene in Fargo where the poor woman gets tangled up in the shower curtain and falls down the stairs in terror makes me very angry and sad.

Babies or children being hurt.

Rapes.

Any violence really. I'm a complete wuss.

I quite like a psychological thriller / crime drama so violence doesn't really effect me in film / on TV, but stalking behaviour gives me the creeps. I think it was an episode of Criminal Minds where the killer broke in and waited hidden all day and evening, watching the woman then came out and attacked her in the middle of the night. That played on my mind a lot.

Also, anything where an animal is hurt or killed and I hate it (SPOILER ALERT - John Wick and Water For Elephants traumatised me). Even if an animal attacks a person and they shoot it for example, my thought is always 'they could have done X,Y or Z, they didn't have to kill it' Hmm

I can be pretty hard when it comes to films, I can cope with most scenes providing it has a really good storyline that warrants a few grisly scenes here and there. But I just can't bear gratuitously violent films - violence for the sake of the audience just enjoying violence. I don't get it.

No amazing storyline, just very predictable torture, violence and gore

Films like Saw and Hostel for example. Nope, not for me. Makes my stomach turn and I'm in no way entertained.

Slop! Kissing, lovey dovey bollocks. /shudder. Give me blood and pulling off heads anyday!

I also can’t abide supposed weepys either. Like Marley and me left me cold, I would have throttled that dog half way into the film.

If you have such a long list of things you hate in a film, why the jeff did you watch A Serbian Film? I could barely read the storyline on wikipedia Envy (vom)

Everything on your list OP.

I find myself being more easily ruffled as I get older. I couldn't watch half the stuff I did when I was 15 now.

Pretty much the same as PP

Cannot watch any animal abuse, child abuse.

Can't watch if the dog dies.

Agreed re sadism. Movies like The Purge, home invasion, people hurting and killing for fun - unless it is well deserved, like vengeance films where the victim did something really awful and deserves all they get Grin

A Dogs Purpose had me blubbing like a baby Grief

I won't watch torture movies like Saw or hostel etc. I like a good old ghosty /supernatural movie.

I too cannot watch cannibalism Tango freaks me right out.

Weebo same here, I used to lap up horror in my younger years, now I cannot stand it.

What about animated movies that are sad even though they’re animations. I’m thinking along the lines of Watership Down and Plague Dogs. Bambi and the Fox and Hound, I can’t cope with those. One of the saddest movies was God Bless the Child, I balled at the end.
