Not sure she's actually seen many (apart from the Star Trek reboots) ... what would be your top picks for this age group please?

Alien and Alien 2. Space and a kick arse female lead.

ErrolTheDragon Fri 13-Dec-13 14:44:33

I think Alien might be too scary. I was a student when the first one came out and didn't like the sound of it then and still don't TBH! But thanks for the suggestion - I'm sure they're good films.

She may like the rebooted TV series of Battlestar Galactica

ErrolTheDragon Fri 13-Dec-13 14:56:12

Not seen that - DH and I probably would like it even if she didn't. grin

Attack the block
Starship trooper
2001 space odyssey
12 Monkeys
War of the worlds
Day of the Triffids
Invasion of the body snatchers
total recall
the andromeda strain (actually, the book is highly recommendable)

shall I go on?

Francagoestohollywood Fri 13-Dec-13 14:57:31

Whoops, I didn't see you asked for that particular age group, I thiought they watched everything at 14.

Francagoestohollywood Fri 13-Dec-13 14:58:37

back to the future!

Battlestar Galactica is great, I agree.

Also Serenity (film) and Firefly (series) - watch the series first.

I've just finished Fringe - it went a bit post apocalyptic at the end and the science is absolutely ridiculous, but good story.

everything Franca says !!!

Francagoestohollywood Fri 13-Dec-13 15:02:01

almost forgot blade runner!

Rollermum Fri 13-Dec-13 15:05:07

I was going to say Blade Runner too. Also I Robot.

BaaHumbug Fri 13-Dec-13 15:06:34

A very old one, I've always liked Silent Running.

justsodamntired Fri 13-Dec-13 15:13:11

Bet she'd love Serenity and Gattaca. Not scary and very accessible.

AverageHeight Fri 13-Dec-13 15:18:40

2001 space odyssey
Star Wars!!!

Does she want thoughtful (along the lines of Moon) or blockbuster (Independence Day)?

ChaffinchOfDoom Fri 13-Dec-13 15:21:14

total recall
12 monkeys
the new one with Idris elba in it - prometheus
war of the worlds

ProfondoRosso Fri 13-Dec-13 15:22:35

YY to Blade Runner and Inception.

I love Tarkovsky's original Russian version of Solaris - really strong messages about the meaning of life and science. It is quite long, though!

INeedSomeHelp Fri 13-Dec-13 15:28:13

Tron - does that count as science fiction? It will probably seem very dated to a 14 year old now.

BaaHumbug Fri 13-Dec-13 15:34:13

Is she too old for Flight of the Navigator?

Probably not - I'm 47 and still not too old for it. grin

MysteriousHamster Fri 13-Dec-13 15:39:39

Another one for Gattaca.

ErrolTheDragon Fri 13-Dec-13 15:43:36

>Does she want thoughtful (along the lines of Moon) or blockbuster (Independence Day)?

Not sure TBH. Up till now I'd have said she would prefer something with a bit of humour (some sci-fi can be awfully up itself dolorous, can't it?) and not too dystopian/pessimistic (though of course she loves Hunger Games so maybe that's my taste not hers now).

pollywollydoodle Fri 13-Dec-13 15:51:38

solyent oldie but goodie
