Not sure there is really such a medical category as 'nervous breakdown'. These days doc would be more likely to speak of depression, or post-traumatic stress, or schizophrenia, or anxiety, whatever -- i.e.of a specific disorder. Nervous breakdown was probably only ever a euphemism for one or other of these.

Ok thanku. My dad had a, what was called a nervous breakdown 20yrs ago.
At the side of the forehead (temple) are some nerves that can "go" at a point where you can take anymore.
My dad has these smptoms now and I wonder if anyone knows what I mean??
His head is numb and his stomach has major anxiouty.
Does anyone know what Im talking about?

Iv been reading lots of threads. There are a number of posts about being depressed and suffering from anxiouty.
If you didnt get treated and did not have medication what do you all think your symptoms would be?

there is no such diagnosis as 'nervous breakdown'.

Nervous Breakdown is the socially acceptable (to those who balk at concept of mental illness) terminology applied to mental ill health and as such encompasses all manner of problems from anxiety to depression to psychosis and so on...

hobbgoblin- that is a great description, (especially for those who 'struggle' to understand Mental illness)

Oops, but I sounded all conceited and knowledgeable, sorry. I'm not qualified to define the term exactly but I do believe that is the reality.

Parker- Im really not sure about the numbness in the temporal area, although I have heard people talk about 'pressure' in the head.

I think if he has physical painful or strange sensations in his head then he should get this checked out. It is better to rule out other things before looking at psychosomatic stuff. Both are important matters to address but the psychosomatic is easier to deal with once other things have been checked.

Does he have things in his mind that he is anxious about?

Yes sorry I really should of mentioned why he is feeling this way!
He has lost his brother less than 4 weeks ago and they were so so close.
Maybe it is pressure on the head?
Iv taken him to the doc today and he has been put on ad's and I asked for him to be referred to the mental health services.

OP I'm really not sure what you are driving at here. Is there something you are expecting it to be?

Why is the pressure on the head thing so pivotal?

Because my dad has explained it to so many people and so have I and no one seems to be able to relate to it.

parker, just read this - im sorry to hear about your dad (you posted on my thread)I can relate to the feelings he is describing. I get this when i am in a real anxious state.

I think it is understandable that your dad is feeling so bad just now, very sad about his brother.

I take citalopram, it has worked for me really well. I have a severe anxiety disorder and just now im not doing so great either so i totally understand your dads position. What i will say is this: He is lucky to have you supporting him, that makes the world of difference i can tell you.
Citalopram is a drug that is very similar to prozac, which you may have heard of. It is used more because it has fewer side effects. Yes, it can take up to 2 weeks to kick in and you can actually feel shitty for the first few days or so. I felt better straight away, i did experience slight side effects at first but it wore off.

Do pester your GP for a mental health refferal, it makes things happen so much quicker.

anxiety can produce a whole bunch of physical symptoms. What you describe here sounds like anxiety. I have had everything from a tingly head to tingling feet! Head aches, tiredness. Panic attacks, heart palpitations. The symptoms are as real as they would be if there was a "physical" cause.

"'Nervous Breakdown' is a term which is no longer used by the medical community, but it is a great way to describe how it FEELS."
