So today I was diagnosed with OCD and BPD

Hi :)

I saw the consultant psychiatrist today and was expecting a diagnosis of bipolar as according to my first appointment I was ticking all of the boxes.

I went alone, walked out with a diagnosis of OCD ( cleaning mainly ) and emotional unstable personality disorder- otherwise known as borderline personality disorder.

I'm shocked and sad and feel like crap. Full of cold and time of the month and then this!

Psych has reviewed all my meds ( I also have fibromyalgia ) and has decided to withdraw me off fluoxetine and start me on Venlafaxine instead, has also prescribed Zopiclone due to my horrendous sleeping patterns and has referred me for cbt etcetera.

I just needed to get this down. I'm relieved I have answers, I'm not " lazy " or " flaky " as have been recently called, I am unwell.

Does anyone have any experience of this please? The thread I found on BPD is a zombie thread.

My dp really doesn't get this, he pretends to! He massively resents me being a sahm and brings it up at every opportunity. I'm in severe pain all day, I take over 30 tablets a day for pain and MH issues. I just want to feel myself again.
Sorry for rambling on, MN is my saviour, my first point of call. I just feel a bit lost.

I'm bumping this for you because I want to give you a hug. I'm sorry this hasn't been answered, sometimes they get shoved fast down the board they get missed Flowers

Sorry missed out, the young lady I care for has eupd and ptsd. Is your husband usually so unsupportive?

And also how many assessments have you had before coming out with this diagnosis?

Glad the appointment was helpful.
I'm not bipolar but have cptsd and very severe depression so take a lot of meds.
Your dp sounds like he's contributing to your ill health with that attitude.

Hiya both and thanks for bumping :)

I kid you not- one assessment with a nurse on 10/11 and diagnosis with the consultant on 28/11.

Having looked into it a bit, I haven't got anger or attatchment issues at all, he kept talking about those and I said no u don't have them.

I honestly seem to fit the descriptors for bipolar. One assessment and I've got BPD Hmm

Again thanks for comments, I'm new to MH boards so wasn't sure what to do next, just looking for support.

Dp honestly doesn't understand why I was so upset on Monday night! Our relationship is a bit rocky atm and this is just another example of him not being supportive.
He's an amazing dad but not so much as a partner.

Oh just to add, 2 nights of taking Zopiclone and it doesn't seem to have any effect on me at all.

I wouldn't trust a diagnosis from someone who saw you just once. BDP is an unusual and very specific type of mental illness.
Depression can manifest itself as physical symptoms, could this be why you are in pain?
I'd ask to see another consultant.

I have just had an extensive chat with two of my psychiatrists. Not in my sleep lol. Yesterday.
I have been diagnosed as having bpd. Except apparently I have not been! Because they need to do an assessment first. And I am the one with issues lol.

Senior psychiatrist basically said though that it's a diagnosis they tend to assume when there's impulsive behaviour. But I will need to be formally assessed and if so they will look at dbt

Being labelled with bpd is a massive step. I'd not be happy with that after only two appointments.
I've swapped from ssris to snris and it was ok, but didn't do anything for me. For some, venlafaxine is very helpful, so fingers crossed. It has a fairly relaxing effect I think?

It's terrible the way BPD is stigmatised, even within the mental health community. I like my diagnosis of it; things make sense and I can read up about it. It's also reassuring to know that I have a recognised condition and psychiatrists have come across it before. I used to fear I always the only person with an illness like it and I was afraid of having it known. I have had it virtually all my life and as I am high-functioning, I cope most of the time. I tried all sorts of meds but Venlafaxine is the one that works for me. Things are stable but fragile now.

I think the problem with BPD diagnosis is whenas with the OPit is given after just one or two appointments. It's about long-term/enduring problems so I think it shouldn't be diagnosed without having the chance to really get to understand/know someone. My pdoc has certainly expressed that opinion. But services are so stretched that people are lucky just to get to see a pdoc, never mind a series of appointments.

There is a real danger in this--if someone is diagnosed as BPD when they are bipolar, and prescribed antidepressants without a mood stabiliser, their illness could be made much worse.

Sorry OP, my head's not working well today. I should have also asked if you have any more appointments scheduled?
