Running injury :(

I’ve hurt my knee running and am gutted as I have a big race coming up in November that required a significant investment from me as it’s in another country. I really, really need to train for it.

It’s not hugely painful - just a bit sore when I bend it to sit down/stand up. I can walk without any pain at all. I’m trying to rest it and taken Brufen.

Has anyone got any experience of this? I am genuinely upset as I’ve been training so hard all year for this race. From googling it kind of sounds like ‘runner’s knee’...? There was no actual injury and I ran happily all last week - it just started to hurt.

Thanks xx

Can you get to a physio?

Both for assessment on what you might have done and what to do about it, and also what sorts of cross training would be best to maintain fitness whilst you can't run.

Elliptical trainer? Pool jogging? Swimming? Kayaking? Hand-bike?

Also things like Pilates and (hot) yoga

Good luck sorting it out. Hope it comes good in time

(If not, can you defer?)

I would second the idea of a physio, one who treats runners. Do you do any strength training at all? If not it may be that you need to do some exercises to strengthen the muscles supporting the knee. A physio assessment would identify any areas of weakness and show you how to build them up.

Ice is a little miracle on lots of injuries but you have to do it much more than seems reasonable. 20 mins several times a day.

But see a physio or (my preference) osteopath. Some injuries will recover in time for a November race with treatment

How experienced a runner are you - ie have you done a lot of training, or are you new to it and have stepped up the mileage quite rapidly?

What distance is the race and are you aiming for a specific time, or just to finish?

As for the pain - can you describe it? Is it dull, or sharp? And do you know what brought it on?

Lots of factors to consider here..!
