Put on weight since joining gym!

Stopped running for a while due to tendonopathy in both knees. I now go to the gym 3x pw, walk to work, occasional 2-3M walk jog with the dog at weekends. Been going to gym for 5 weeks & put on half a stone since joining!

How much do i need to do to equate to running 3M 3/4x pw for goodness sake?

But have you put on or lost inches? How do your clothes feel?

What are you doing at the gym?

The classic pitfall is "I've been to the gym so I can eat that!"
Are you eating more? Weight is much more about food intake than exercise.

Defo weight gain. My belts tell me so!

Sample session: 15mins on cross trainer at a highish level; 45mins weights; 10 mins on bike; run home (usually with a rucksack as I go on way home from work) good half mile uphill.

Maybe it just goes to show how much more effective running is at burning those calories? I eat as I feel & really don't think I'm eating more. Just burning less?

What sort of weights are you doing?

3 miles running only burns 500cals and your body gets efficient if you do the one exercise a lot so I don't think it's just swapping running for other training, there's something else going on.

You'll probably find that:

A) you are building muscle, so part of the number on the scales in down to that
B) you are eating more to fuel the exercise and possibly eating more than you burn

I would start tracking calories using a tracker (MFP or similar). I started the gym in Feb, and by April I was heavier by about 2lbs. Felt gutted, but found that I looked more toned. It prompted me to start calorie counting and hey presto, I am now a stone down.
