Can you do 10k and want to do a half?

Hello everyone, i started plodding a few months ago and have done a few 10k races - this spurred me on to enter a half in february. Anyone else in a similar position? I am thinking that by upping one run a week by one km each week will get me to the right distance by the end of january. I seem to get a hip injury if i increase too much. I am able to commit to three runs per week. If anyone is up for this please join in, or if anyone has done this - am I going about it the right way? Thanks!

I think you are going about it the right way. Try and keep your longer run the same day each week (or nearly) so you always have a week between.
You don't need to train to full race distance... Many people stop at 16-19km and rely on race day adrenaline for the extra.
Of you can, do some interval training one day a week - it will make you stronger as well as faster which will help as you up the distances

Thank you Pootlebug that is helpful - I do speed work on a Monday which seems to be helping my speed a little bit - I have just done a 10k race this morning and thought to myself at the 9k marker "I am
never going to be able to do a half!".

I've done just that, my half is in November and I have a place for London marathon too.

Are you doing strength training? I found I was getting sore hips over 10k and started doing a few hip/pelvic stability exercises. I did 8 miles on Monday and didn't even have a twinge. It really works for me.

Well done

Sounds good. A few years ago, I started C25k in the October, completed it in the March. Did an 8.5 mile fun run in the June and got talked into a HM in the October, funnily enough 365 days after the first run!

Mixing the training up helps. I'm quite a creaky sort of person, and started up when newly recovering from SPD, but I haven't had any running specific injuries, and I've put that down to keeping my routines varied and having rest days. I also run on a mix of surfaces which eases the impact.

I started running in april. went from = to 10k in June. Am doing a half marathon next Sunday. Tbh I am totally shitting myself.

My training schedule went down the toilet over the summer (too hot to train, loads of booze) haven't quite got back into the swing of it. I am going to be shit Shock

I ran 21k last weekend, so I can do it. but soon sloooowly. My dh can do it in 1hr40. I will be significanrlt loser. I can't seem to build up any speed. Once I do it I don't think I will do it again.

Panic Sad

Thanks all - Kitty yes I have started Pilates exercises as I also get hip issues and they have really helped.thank you and good luck with the marathon! Amazing stuff!!
Mrs nook luckily we run around a small village so quite a lot of off road field running mixed with road running which helps strengthen my ankles but I don't do anything else. Maybe swimming would help too but not sure when I could fit it in!
Ernest - do not panic! You know you can do it! A friend of mine did a half the other week and the most she had ever run was 2 miles and she just got carried along by the crowd - she managed to run for 10 miles and walk/ran the rest. I know how you feel if you are not prepared but you just have to go for it!!! Let me know how you get on, am cheering you on from here!!

This is me too, I've done a few 5/10ks and am 2 weeks off from my 1st half. Training has hit a wall with injury in the last month or so but I'm still planning to do the half, the time I wanted is out but as long as I finish I'll be happy.

It sounds like you've got a good plan. Good luck

I planned this last year but a knee injury got in my way. I was up to 17km in training. I am now trying to start back up running training properly again and targeting 10km in November. This is the same as last year but I have done a tonne of strength training in between and have still some running base so hopefully I will be able to aspire to a half early next year.

Ah good luck - how did you reach 17k? Gradual increase each week?

Yes Cheese, gradual increase for one long run each week, one track session for speed work and one shorter run 7-10km and maybe one more run.

I was just thinking about this over the weekend. I increased time running not distance so this weekend I ran for an hour and next weekend I will run 65 minutes so some bad weeks the distance might not improve by much but the time was getting longer.

I did my first 10km run since January at the weekend. I was delighted.

Hi well I did it. Was do exhausted after and now I can't sleepSad

It was supposed to be rainy but turned out an amazing autumnal day, sunny and warmish in the sun but cool in the shade so pretty nice really as I don't like running in heat.

I actually did my fastest ever 5k and 10k and longest fastest run ever so for me I did well and I don't feel embarrassed by my performance. I'm not sure I'd do it again. I can't say I enjoyed it Smile I think I might stick to it 10k. I think I enjoy that distance more. But I'm glad I've done it. And èven more glad it's out of the way. I signed up for it in April and that's when I started running so went from 0 to 21k in 7 months. I guess that's OK.

Good luck to everyone with their running. I had a good training app called 10k runner and 21k runnerving. I think by fitness 22. Did the job.

Hopefully I'll get some sleep tonight.

Well done Ernest. I started running last year and currently trying to increase from 5k to 10k. It's a slow process! I'm thoroughly impressed by a half marathon.

Well done Ernest! That sounds like you nearly enjoyed it! A great achievement and thank you for the app tips will check them out. Doing 12k on Saturday instead of Parkrun. Have never run further than 10k before so wish me luck! Smile
