Calais migrants could end up in Dover

Ironic really but the mayor of Calais has said that she no longer wants to pay/enforce the border controls on the French side of the Channel (and why should she?) Rather than fewer migrants, this result has literally opened the gates.

She can frankly, go swivel. It's not her choice. France let this 'jungle' build up, it's their problem.

Unforeseen consequence. Never mind it's democracy innit. Hmm
It's not over until Article 50 is implemented. Write to your MP, sign the petitions.

Another thing we (and by we I mean those of us who bothered to do 10 minutes of research) knew could happen before the referendum.
None of what had happened so far has been a surprise.

I wouldn't get excited about this. It's just predictable political posturing by the French National Front.

In any case, if this is the biggest of your worries right now then you have your head in the sand.

Well she receives money from the EU to help police it. Why should she bother now. They can be like other European countries such as Hungary have been with the Syrian refugees. Open both the front and back doors and just let them pass through to where they really want to get to ie us.

Dover voted Leave, didn't they? Grin

You are screwing up EU and want France to be polite to you? Leavers were warned a Leave result would snake EU absolutely angry. You voted Leave, didn't you?

Kelandry - actually they can do that. Why should they help us now?

Happy to be corrected, but I think it would probably be the French interior minister who would make decisions regarding border control, no the Mayor of Calais.

Having said that, this was always a pretty foreseeable consequence of a Brexit vote.

Don't blame them really. The result has stuck two fingers up at them so why should they care.

Report
Kelandry · 27/06/2016 12:30

It'll never happen. They want to ask us to please please take a 'share' of the problem they built up, and we can say no.

Homemama · 27/06/2016 12:30

Mackerel, I thought I'd read before the vote that she had a devolved budget, which included EU money, to pay for the border controls. I will try and find it but I can't remember which newspaper the article was in. I'll have a look.

I Think DC said this in campain?

He was shot down by many in Leave.

But it was obvious. The French have never been our closest allies & they also play by their own rules.

Mistigri · 27/06/2016 12:31

What Mackeral said. In fact he (Cazeneuve) sat pretty firmly on Macron (economy minister) when the latter floated the idea of an end to the Le Touquet agreement.

So this isn't going to happen any time soon (not till after the french election and a formal brexit).

Kelandry · 27/06/2016 12:31

I also think France has had enough of the Eu and is next in line to frexit.

Homemama · 27/06/2016 12:32

They didn't build it up. They could have just let them pass through. They followed EU rules with EU money to help stop them coming across the channel.

We need to stop pissing about and stop fining tiddly amounts like £10,000 to employers that employ illegal immigrants. £100,000 per illegal immigrant then prison.

This is not exactly an unexpected story.

Those poor people in the camp. Like their life isn't shit enough already.

Report
Kelandry · 27/06/2016 12:36

France have let the camp build up! They want them sneaking over here. I think if they play hardball then we too will have to get tough. Do the French want us stopping their ferry services and closing the tunnel to all but outbound traffic?

Report
Homemama · 27/06/2016 12:38

Personally I don't think we should wait. Do it now as the French want and accept the consequences. Sink into a recession. We don't deserve them to help us make it easier. DH and I will be fine. Secure jobs and good equity and savings.
Ebbw Vale in Wales. Close to 40% unemployment. Due to being on the EU's most deprived list, they have benefitted massively with huge amount of infrastructure and a new link rd. The EU send to them vastly more than they send to the EU yet they voted overwhelmingly to leave citing immigration of which there is virtually none locally. Well I look forward to seeing them sink down the hole whist they wait for their London centric right wing PM to remember them.
Let them eat the fucking cake they insisted on baking!

Kelandry · 27/06/2016 12:43

Must be nice in your ivory tower there homemama, maybe Ebbw are excited about being free and don't give a shit about your opinion??

Yes, because that's not going to hurt us at all, is it? Hmm

Well, if we're putting up borders I'm pretty sure ours is the south coast of England not France. Why shouldn't France turn a blind eye to it all?? This is not an unexpected consequence of brexit.

You are so deluded. France didn't let it "build"! It is there because it's where the fucking land ends. The border of uk is Calaise. They did you a Favor and you did what? They would send all officers back to uk and the camp will be dispersed quickly. Via boats of course . Welcome to the reality .

Yes, it must have been so tough for them to accept the new school, road and train station that the EU funded for them, poor dears.
