Leotards and underwear

Does anyone know whether or not knickers should be worn beneath leotards? dd has been told not to wear anything underneath at school, but I go to an adult ballet class and always wear my knickers, so I wondered if there was a definitive answer. What do your dc's schools do?

No idea. How old is your daughter? Does she wear tights/leggings under her leotard?

My dd wears knickers for ordinary gym and ballet lessons, but for competitions and shows she doesn't. In gym competitions it's vital that the knickers don't show (you can lose marks) and it's impossible to be sure they won't, so they aren't worn. Ditto ballet performances.

My DD is 9 years old and has been informed at dancing she is NOT allowed to wear knickers under her leotard in any of her dancing classes (ballet, tap and modern).

I'm sure I always wore pants under mine for ballet. I can't remember taking them off for exams, but it was a long long time ago (junior school)! dd wore them when she did gymnastics, and they did always show and look silly, I have to say! I don't think that it would be very nice to wear a leotard directly against your skin (at least for very long) as they are made out of artificial fibres.

Saw this thread and thought I would add my bit - I did rollerdance (iceskating on wheels) beck in my pre-teens (approx 20 years ago - oh I am so old) I had to wear leotards with the little skirts, and tights - not nice with no knickers. My mum bought me some g-string knickers and customised them for my size by shortening the strings on the sides and they always stayed out of site.

I did ballet for 12 years & once I was wearing tights with my leotard, we were discouraged from wearing knickers as well.

In a school situation children should certainly wear knickers. Boys aren't expected to take their underpants off to play football etc.!
In a dance exam it might be acceptable. My dd did exams in just tights & leotard.....but she changed at home!

I can see how for me it might be a good idea niot to wear them then. I'll try it next lesson. As for dd, not sure really. I can see that not wearing knickers has advantages, but like notagrannyet said it seems a bit odd in a school situaution, esp as boys don't have to take their pants off. tbh, shorts would be great!

My daughter's a keen gymnast. As someone else said, knickers aren't allowed in competition and at her club they're also not permitted in training as they want the girls to be comfortable not wearing them. I used to be a competitive gymnast through uni and it was the same then.

Sadly gymnastics isn't offered at her school but they do have dance and they wear leos for that. Again, nothing underneath because they're told to change out of their normal clothes for reasons of hygiene (sweat etc).

So no, you're not supposed to wear undies under a leotard!

On exam websites it says underwear should not be visible (you get marked down for this) as a dance teacher myself i say don't wear them for exams for the younger children and older ones wear a you know what. Depending on the exam you can... tap jazz modern usually black will be okay, ballet just avoid underwear altogether is my suggestion
