Does anyone know a place called (something like) Ballymaine?

My ancestors are listed on the England and Wales censuses as coming from “Ballymaine, Ireland”. Does anyone have any idea where this place might be? I can’t find it on any maps.

I always thought the Irish part of my family came from County Cork, but one cousin is listed on one of the censuses as coming from Cavan - so something must be wrong.

All suggestions very gratefully received. I’ve been puzzling over this for 15 years... Thank you!

I thought of that - but that’s in Antrim! Would it sound like “Ballymaine” to the ears of an English census taker?

Could it be Ballymore but with wonky handwriting?

Ballina? Co Mayo? That’s where my family are from.

Wow - lots of suggestions! Thank you. I’m not sure how to narrow it down now, but it’s given me a lot of food for thought.

There are a few townlands called Ballymaine in different counties. Maybe they used the name of the townland and/or parish rather than the name of the town/village.
There’s also Ballyraine in Donegal in case it’s a misspelling.

There is a river in Ballymena called the Maine.

This is the first I’ve heard of a townland! That’s exciting. Any idea how I might find out where the Ballymaine townlands are?

Could it be Ballymaise? There is a townland of that name in Co Dublin. And there is a Ballymaine in Co Mayo.
