What's happening in Italy? Media rant.

The media in general and the BBC specifically are really beginning to grate on me. They are only reporting the negatives in every situation. Since the USA death toll has become high that's all they've focused on. What is happening in Italy now? Has it levelled out? If so, why aren't we hearing about it? Why are the recovery rates (far greater numbers) never mentioned at the same time as new cases and death rates?

People need some positivity. I realise that the situation is dire, believe me, I do, but if we are not given some hope in the situation, morale is going to become incredibly low.

Italy had over 700 deaths yesterday

But how many the day before and the day before that - what's the general trend? That's my point. Numbers are just numbers unless they are given context.

It does seem like the measures taken in Italy are starting to work. Agree that it would be good to see more coverage of this especially as people start to get really fed up with lockdown here.

Anyone seen what is happening in India, or the mega-cities in Africa?

Daily confirmed cases in Italy are now trending steeply down (down to 4-5k per day from double that at the peak).

But the daily death toll is still very high because this virus takes between 2 and 8 weeks to kill :(

Italy's figures for Wednesday attached.
The authorities are now cautiously optimistic that their predictions of peak between 3rd-10th April are happening and thus a corner has been turned.
As pp says, there are now fewer cases showing that the 25 day lockdown is working. It's been extended till at least 13th April for the reasons given above.

The number of new infections per day in Italy has fallen from its high and has - at least for the last few days - levelled off. Obviously the death toll will continue to be high for some days/weeks as this lags behind new infections. Lockdown restrictions - and they are very strict - have been extended until April 13. All the talk now is about how to enter the next phase of this, how to keep cases from spiking up again.

Journalists are always looking to scaremonger and clickbait.
The situation is still dire, just not as newsworthy.

I live near a hospital in NE Italy. This morning I’ve heard ambulance sirens approximately every 10 minutes.

OK, that is great news. Not great that the deaths are still high but to be expected. THIS is what we should be given news of. It should be "it's working in Italy, it can work here, be patient" rather than the hideous stuff they are producing every day giving no-one any hope as we just sit and wait.

To be honest, from what I've seen of the UK news and read about in here, they are focusing on what's happening in Italy and Spain in order to remove attention from their own almighty cockup in the early weeks.

Wonderful news for Italy and Spain - let's hope it continues.

I’d agree on the bbc and have commented on it before. I’m actually very surprised by it, the two medical guys they use, fergus Walsh and the other editor guy they use seem either woefully uninformed or deliberately scare mongering.

I’ve watched them too many times basically give contradictory information to what any scientific, government advisor or nhs director has said, sometimes even giving mathematically incorrect information, or quoting “experts” that they don’t name.

A couple of nights ago I watched the editor guy saying “experts” only compare death rates. This is factually incorrect, the government, every government, and their advisors look much deeper, you only have to watch the nightly press conference to know that they use many different statistics, from cases, rate of acceleration, hospitalisations , icu cases, even transport usage, as well as data from other countries, to monitor and forecast.

Yet I watched him sit there and say it, that unnamed “experts” only use death rates so we were tracking italy. I genuinely don’t understand how the bbc is allowing these men to state factually incorrect information.

We may or may not be following Italy, but your average eleven year old can compare two death rates by date, why would we have so many professors etc working this, if that’s all they did, the analysis of an eleven year old with a basic table comparing two death rates.

As said, I can’t decide if they are woefully incompetent, or deliberately scaremongering.

@Bluntness100 - I don't know either but it needs to stop. They are going to be responsible for a lot of mental health issues and potentially suicides if this carries on.

Agree op, I wouldn’t mind if they were factually correct, but they are not. They always focus on worst case also,

I’d have expected balanced reporting, looking at it from all angles. But if they couldn’t manage that, the least they could do is be accurate in what they state.

Fergus Walsh announced at the beginning of this week on the six o clock news, our death rate was doubling very two days so we would be hitting w thousand deaths a day by today. . We are not doubling every day, and have not done so since early on the infection spread, weeks ago, we are every three to four days, and over a thousand a day would make us worse than Italy, and yet he sat there and said it.

I honestly can’t get my head round it. It’s factually incorrect information they are stating.

Sorry but the rates of death and infection in Italy Spain are not "Wonderful or Great news"

That's an utterly absurd POV, talk about clutching at straws!!! 1000s more in Italy and Spain will carry on dying at they will across the globe.

Regardless, the BBC and others have covered the very slight decreases in new infections but still with the seriousness and caution the story deserves.

All of this before we even begin to tackle the global depression we are heading for.

Maybe op needs some straws to clutch at, can you blame her?

It’s a desperate situation
There is no end in sight to lockdown
There will be a huge mental health crisis after this

I'm sorry if it looked like I was pleased that there were deaths in Italy and Spain - of course, I'm not!

I think it's wonderful that the death rate appears to be lessening - and is hopefully the beginning of the end for these poor people.

Do you not think that they will be following the stats and thinking "Oh, thank God!"?
