Conception

Period on wedding day - disaster?

Hi all - I'm a newbie but have been lurking a while Wink

DP and I want to TTC straight after our wedding, preferably the night of, but I have just worked out that my period is due smack bang on my wedding day

I've never properly monitored my periods, only started in the last two months or so because of TTC in the near future and wanted to know roughly when ovulation would be.

So, my question is: is there anything I can take to delay my period? I know you can just keep taking the pill through your 'break' days but I'm not on the pill - haven't been for a year now

And, if I take something/the pill to delay the wedding-period, will it screw up hormones etc... making it harder for us to conceive until my hormones have settled down again?

Any experience of this?

You could TTC the cycle before the wedding - if it worked you'd only be a couple of weeks gone, and no period but the catch would be reduced alcohol consumption!

Mrscarmac, don't worry about it, I bet you'll get your period a few days late with the stress.

Day 14-16 are the days when you are most fertile, though I've known someone to get pregnant on day 18 as her ovulation was delayed with stress!

Good luck and congratulations.

Ask your gp for norethisterone - it's not a contraceptive though so do take care if you want to wait until after your wedding to start trying.

I had my period on my wedding day, and to be honest we were so exhausted that evening we wouldn't have managed to DTD anyway! Sadly no honeymoon baby, although it was fun trying.
Check with your doctor but I'be heard that skipping your week off the pill will stop your period coming.

Thanks all - I am all for trying the cycle before the wedding and (all being well) telling people it's a honeymoon baby ;-)

Ditto sizethree... I had my period in my wedding day, we were also too tired to dtd (and too drunk!) but did get a honeymoon baby, he's 2 weeks old now. Don't worry about not dtd on your wedding night, loads of people don't!

I didn't realise that having a "honeymoon baby" was a thing :-/

I'm currently pregnant with a honeymoon baby so for me it's a thing Smile

Congratulations Oyster!

Obviously people do get pregnant on their honeymoon, but didn't realise it was something to stress about, and that it's a status thing to be able to say you had a honeymoon baby, like that makes the perfect package.

I thought the post was going to be about struggling in the loos with a wedding dress on! Grin

I don't think anyone means it like that. Lots of people start trying straight after the wedding so it's more like an aren't--we-lucky-to-get-pregnant-so-quickly thing. (We started trying 5 months before the wedding but just so happened to get lucky on honeymoon. Probably because we didn't do much else but shag)

"I thought the post was going to be about struggling in the loos with a wedding dress on!"
I had my period on my wedding day and yes, this was a problem. Also: the dress is white! And everyone is looking at you! It was a worry.

Good point about the loo actually. Depending on the dress it could be tricky. Changing tampons might go a bit beyond the duties a bridesmaid is prepared to assist with.

I really think that this is the last thing you should be stressing about on your wedding day - so much other stuff to think about and enjoy. My dh and I did technically start ttc on our wedding night, but it didn't happen for 5 months after that. It was no big deal. Getting pregnant is not something you can put on your wedding plan!!!

I would definitely be more stressed about the dress! I had a UTI my wedding night so no DTD for me :( I really wouldn't stress, it will be a wonderful day regardless of whether you have AF or not. Many congratulations :)

People will know it isn't a honeymoon baby if you conceive the month before. Are you not allowed to have sex pre marriage?Confused

Yes, Dash, that's the disaster I thought was being referred to in the thread title.

I'd never heard of a couple trying to conceive on their wedding night, I thought statistically the chance of a shag was pretty low . I just thought it sounded like a lot of pressure to put on yourselves, why not just relax and enjoy your wedding.

We already had a child when we went on honeymoon, so didn't need to worry about having all the sex Grin.

I reckon just DTD on your wedding night AF be damned. The maid will just think you were a virgin. Wink
DH and I have been known to do it in the shower in such situations...

To be clear - I've only ever heard the phrase "honeymoon baby" when people conceived before the wedding and were trying to cover it up (old fashioned/catholic I guess) - as far as I know, it is in no way a gloat aimed at people who took longer to conceive - bit odd to jump to that conclusion in my opinion.

My DP wants to wait until after the wedding for religious reasons (which I think is a tad ridiculous as we're already sleeping together but respect his views and that's a whole other thread!)

As for people "knowing" it was conceived before the honeymoon - bloody hell! How much info do women share about their pregnancies these days?! I have never asked any of my friends when their babies were conceived and we are talking weeks, not months so unless they were very committed weird to find out the exact day of conception, who would know?

My question was purely related to the impractical white dress, unpredictable bright red bleeding and everyone looking at me issue. Will have to chat with DP as period leakage could ruin the overall effect of my dress somewhat grin

I would recommend that a bridesmaid keeps a supply of high absorbency pads and tampons in a small bag and that they are given the task of reminding you to change them every two hours. Unless you have extremely heavy AF that should keep you safe. Do you have that kind of relationship with a bridesmaid? What kind of free is it? Have you tried it on and practiced hoiking it up to go to the loo? If not I would recommend you do before the wedding so you get the hang of it :)

My DH is the same! Religion didn't stop him from living with me before marriage but it did stop him allowing children before marriage!

I would be worried about the practical side on being on my period. not TTC. I would get the pill from the doctor that delays your period. If not consider using a menstrual cup (eg Mooncup) so you don't have to change tampons every few hours.
Worry about TTC on honeymoon!

It's not hard to work out. Pregnancy is nine months. Most people can count to nine, friends will know when you got married and if it was in January and the baby comes in July or August they'll know you were pregnant when you got married.

Report
MrsCaramac · 29/05/2015 16:42

Oh people always have the baby bang on 9 months? To the day? Haha!
That'll be why there are so many threads on here from women being weeks overdue or having premature births then Hmm

It's not ideal to have your trips on your wedding day, but I'm sure yiu've coped with many many periods in your life steady and this one won't be any different.
As I posted earlier, I had mine on my wedding day too and wasn't concerned about my dress at all. I took a belt and braces approach and used a tampon and back up sanitary towel and had a clutch bag with extra supplies.
Just weigh up whether you want to take the medication to prevent a period coming, which may pop your cycle out of whack a bit abd you'll lose a month of TTC. Or whether you can just pretend you're like the girl wearing a white leotard or riding a white horse and feel comfortable that periods really don't cause that much drama.
