Urgent advice please girls - really bad red bum

Hi,

I have a 10 month old daughter who is teething at the mo. Although sometimes she has had a little redness/nappy rash for the last 2 days it has got worse. I dont think its just the teething?

Tonight she was in so much pain I could of cried for her, she couldnt even stand the cool bath. All of her bum (front and back) is bright red.

She does have sensitive skin and i can only use 1 type of baby wipe and I still mainly use water and cotton wool but it has never been like this.

What could be causing it? Plus any idea what I should do?

Could be teething. Try sudocrem tonight and see how it is tomororow

Mine have all had about 24/48hr of bad nappy rash around hte point at which a tooth actually breaks the surface. Sounds like this is the most likley.

Cotton wool and water would be hte way to go until it settles (usually v quickly if it is teeth).

Metanium is hte best I have found as a treatment - can be found at Tescos etc.

Another possibility is that it could be thrush...particularly of it doesn't resolve quickly. For this Canestan cream from chemist is worth trying.

Sounds like thrush which can be common around teething - ditch the sudocrem (thrush feeds on the zinc and flourishes) and use either vaseline or metanium (foul yellow cream that stains everything but works wonders).

If it is thrush would there be any discharge like adulds or just redness?

do you breastfeed, if you do squirt a bit of milk on her bottom and let it air dry - works wonders for nappy rash.

I would get some Badger Balm. Its organic olive oil with chamomile and its miracle stuff. Its pricy at 3.99 for a small(and i mean small) tin, but it also works for cradle cap and I use it for moisturisor.

John lewis is where i buy it.

let her go around with no nappy(assuming shes crawling, nappyless towel under bum floor time if she isnt) on when you can, rinse with just water if she wees.
Let the air get to it then cream overnight, then more nappy off time.

I dont breastfeed any longer.

With your advice I plan to go and buy some metanium cream, only use water and cotton wool, and if it is still bad go to docs.

Can the doc give her anything if it is thrush?

I have also just read that certain foods especially tomato based stuff can cause it too? I do tend to give her jar food.

Yes Dr can give canestan for thrush, but you can get it over the counter anyway (although prescription would be free)

Bananas did it on my DD, but the HV had thought it was tomatoes. The Dr can give you canestan.

Why not bundle? There is a canestan designed for nappy rash, so that a dr isn't bothered for trivial matters such as this. I think that it is safe from 6m....and designed for parents to buy without having to trapse to GP.

Obviously if there any doubts, if it is pimply then one should see a GP, but otherwise I don't see teh problem with buying a product designed to treat nappy thrush?

Tomorrow I will also for the 1st time let her go without her nappy for a while. No doubt she will wee all over! However if it will help i will give it a go.

Fine to get canesten over the counter - pharmacist will advise if there are any questions.

i don't think a baby crying so much that she couldn't even stand cool water on her skin is something too trivial to bother a dr with and wd want to check what it was before i used antifungals tbh

Maybe I should try and get her to a doc tomorrow then. The surgery we use is closed but I am sure I will be able to find a 24 hour place somewhere.

I really do feel so much better for getting all this advice. My little princess is asleep now.

Quick tip on metanium - it's really good, but can get stuck on to weeping skin or sores so use a thin layer.

If mine has an attack of NR I always use a really thick layer of sudocrem for the daytime nappies and at night the metanium. As recommended by docs.

A really good nappy balm to use is the one by Green baby, my LO never, ever had NR when I was using it for the first year.

Both mine are just the same when they are teething. I swear by vaseline, esp at night, I reckon it forms a waterproof barrier so the wetness doesn't touch the skin before it soaks into the nappy. Anyway it is fab for my two, both have sensitive skin excema etc and sudocream does not seem to do the trick at all. Also it is very very cheap! If you are concerned about petrochemicals (know some mnetters are) you can get non-petroleum jelly on the internet though it is not as 'sticky' it is not made with oil byproducts.
