Ds has very dry skin all over his body but the skin behind his knees is red and weepy wih a few scabs. I don't know what to do. I leave him without clothes as much as possible but because he is stil so tiny his knees are always bent so no air can get to the area. What can I do to help?

Take him to the doctors and get him some cream and ointment for his bath. Stop using soap and baby bath as this will dry his skin out more.

Avena, I am not using anything in his bath at all, just water and even then his skin seems worse afterwards. Iwill go to the doctor and see what he says. He prescribed aqueous cream a few weeks ago but it has done no good.

Aqueous cream often doesn't work, it didn't help my ds at all, some people found it made their children worse.

The best thing is to try a few different creams, there are lots of threads on here with recommendations if you do a search. I use Aveeno bath oil for DS and Aveeno cream twice a day to moisturise. You could also try putting some porridge oats in a muslin and putting that in the bath water as it is quite soothing.

Hello. My DS who is now 26 weeks has had eczema in exactly this place for about 2 months. My DR prescribed a steriod cream, which I am slightly nervous of overusing. It definitely does make it better but its not cleared up altogether. Both my DCs have eczema which they have inherited from DH. We also have aqueous cream and diprobase cream to put on after bath and oilatum to go in the bath.

Does it bother your DS? Mine seems completely unaware of it fortunately. DD who is almost 4 has really only just started to find it itchy.

I didn't find aqueous cream any good for dd; apparently different creams work for different people and you have to keep experimenting (was told this by friend with bad eczema after two ruddy years trying to sort it out). Someone on Mumsnet recommended Aveeno, which I have found really good.

Have you tried oilatum in the bath?

He may need steroid cream. You don't want to get into using it too much but it can break the cycle. Ask your doctor.

Oh, and look at other potential irritants: are you washing all his clothes, bedding etc with sensitive washing powder? Avoiding fabric conditioner? Keeping fluffy toys/other dust magnets from his bed?

So I've just repeated what bran said, then!

Oilatum is good stuff. ds used to get eczema, this really helped. I used to smother him in baby oil after he'd had a bath, it worked better than diprobase cream for him. With alot of eczema it's a case of testing different creams and seeing which one helps the most.

You doctor will give you some hydrocortisone cream (steriod based), use this thinly on the affected areas.

Great minds think alike hester.

dd had it at this age and unfortunately, only the steroid cream worked. She also had it badly on her face.

I'm pleased it's not bothering him. That's definitely something.

Don't be afraid to go back if the next cream doesn't work - as others have said, it can be a trial and error thing to find the right one.

And although people don't like the sound of steroid creams, they are very low percentages the ones they prescribe first, and if they relieve the redness, itchiness and soreness, then it's great for them.

It was probably you who put me onto Aveeno, bran.

I am using Fairy non bio, don't use a fabric softener. He sleeps on a fresh sheet everyday and he sleeps in just a nappy covered with a thin sheet (he is a very warm baby). It doesn't seem to bother him at all, I think it just shocked me to see it, as neither I or dd have had problems with something like this so I don't really know what to do about it. It can't help that the skin is always touching skin iyswim. It must get quite sweaty [yuck emoticon]

Hester, is that true about cuddly toys. DS has a steiff teddy bear and a fluffy lion which he cuddles to go to sleep. I don't need to take them away from him do I?

I don't actually know if it's true, strawberrycornetto, it's just what I was advised. I do actually let dd sleep with her very special toys, but I wash them regularly (don't know if you can bung a stieff bear in the wash, though) and I change her bed linen twice a week.

Someone told me that if you think that DC is reacting to the washing powder, put it on an additional rinse cycle afterwards to make sure all the soap residue gets removed from the fabric.

Try Aalgo!! I have twin sons who are 19 months old, one of them has suffered from chronic eczema for the past 18 months. He has been prescribed many treatments, few of which have worked temporarily (betamethasone, hydrocortisone), most have just made his condition much worse (deprobase, double base, E45, oilatum). Every day somebody recommended something different, oats in the bath, black soap, hemp, chinese doctor but nothing seemed to work. I put him on goats milk and removed wheat from his diet and on the recommendation of a herbalist I started to give him acidopholus in his milk. There was a little improvement but not a huge one. I was in Bromley 2 weeks ago and found a market stall selling Aalgo. They claimed it would clear eczema and scoriasis and it had a money back guarantee. The tub was just under £20 and although the fear of being scammed at a market was at the back of my mind, I didn't hesitate, I'd try anything to ease the pain and irritation my poor baby has suffered most of his little life. Boy am I glad I did! I bathed him in it as soon as I got back from the market. Two tablespoons of this yucky brown seaweed powder sieved into warm water twice a day. Immediately after the first bath there was an improvement to his skin. Now 12 days on and his skin is almost clear. He still scratches occasionally, although I think it is habit now. I suffer from scoriasis myself and I jump in the bath with him. My scoriasis is almost gone now too!! I won't lie, it does stink and getting into a brown bath takes a bit of getting used to but Aalgo has been a miracle for us, 2 weeks ago my sons legs were scabbed and on the verge of infection (again) as he was scratching virtually 24 hours a day, now his healthy new skin is coming through and he is looking fantastic. Another week and I reckon it will be gone completely! Forget steroids and lotions and potions from the doctors until you have tried this. I am telling anyone who listens about this magical powder as most people seem to know someone who suffers from eczema!!! You can buy it at www.aalgo.com

RealArsenalMum - Thanks for that, I've just ordered some as my dc3 hasn't responded to any of the treatments that worked for my other two.

£32.50 plus £6.50 shipping online though
Here's hoping.....will report back when we try it.

littlelamb - are you bathing him every day? I find just getting my eczema wet makes it worse, even with Oilatum etc.

Maybe try bathing him less often if possible? At 11 weeks, it's not like he's rubbing yogurt in his hair everyday...

RAM, are you someone who has name changed recently? I'm probably being overly cynical but I get suspicious when a first time poster gives a glowing recommendation and a website for a product I haven't heard of, but which ought to be well known if it works as well as you claim.

Report
bran · 29/08/2008 13:54

Could you post again and let me know how you get on with the Aalgo please barking. If it does work as well as the website claims it would be useful for DS.

Oh Bran , I hope I haven't been had, there are no other posts from Ram
There is a money back guarantee on the site.
I don't know whether to cancel my order.....

Have been googling and there is a spam poster called Lukey123 that makes the same claims
I'm off to cancel

No, don't cancel your order please! I have nothing to do with Aalgo other than having bought 1 tub! I am just a normal Mum with 4 kids who is absolutely over the moon with a product I found at a market of all places that actually does what it says on the tin!! My son has suffered so much with his eczema and I hate to see any child suffering so if I can recommend something that genuinely works I'll shout it from the rooftops! Please don't be cynical, I am absolutely genuine!!!

If I could show you what my sons body was like 2 weeks ago and show you how it is now, you would drop everything and buy it now, I promise.
