Constipated toddler has become unwell over the last few hours

Dd who is 3.5 has started movical yesterday.

I thought it was a urine infection at first but the tests have come back clear. Dd has been complaining of back ache and tummy ache for around 3 weeks.

She had been fine within herself apart from the tummy and back ache.

Doctor advised over the phone yesterday that she is most likely constipated due to urine coming back clear.

Has prescribed movical in sachet formula to be taken once a day but can be taken up to 4 times a day.

She had a dose last night after nursery and has two doses today. Very small amount of poo has passed.

Dd has been complaining of pain in the tummy and back more than ever today. Shes very whingy, wanting lots of cuddles and not eating much and feels quite warm to touch.

Any advice very much appreciated

Has the doctor actually seen her? If not I'd ring 111. It's always better to be safe and seen as an over anxious parent than sorry. Always at the weekend isn't it?!

A nurse saw her approx 3 weeks ago when i said that dds vagina smelt horrible (like an unwashed vagina) and had a look down there and said she didnt think there was a problem but requested the urine sample.

no one has seen her since but the nurse wants to see her next wed to see how we are getting on with the movical

Could it maybe be because the movicol is kicking in, making things uncomfy and added pressure. Hopefully she's brewing for a decent poo. If it gets any worse go to walk in. Horrible when it's the weekend and you can't get to the doctors. Hope she's better soon.

She shouldn't be febrile from constipation, maybe she has something else going on too?

I would just keep a close eye on her. She may have a virus but there's not much you can do if that's the case anyway. Just try to keep her hydrated.

Shes not warm like she was yesterday.

Has had a very small poo and i have given her one movical today and im going to give her another shortly.

My aunt says movical is not a laxative its a bowel lubricator to help poo flow through and it needs to be taken daily for quite sometime?

How long has she been constipated for? She could have a blockage that needs a significant amount of softening to pass. My DD had to have 8 sachets a day for a month before her blockage passed (though that was because we couldn't get a Dr to take us seriously for 2 years)
It could take a few sachets a few days to soften the blockage. Try bicycling her legs too, lots of water and physical activity.

Also worm her. We had thrush and smelly wee for ages. All clear but treated for threadworms and disappeared!

How do i worm her?

Go to boots and buy a treatment.

Wash sheets and towels.

You can also check with a torch at night and you might see them.

The fact she's had tummy ache etc I'd give it a go. Follow up with repeat dose.

Do you have anything that vibrates like an old bouncy chair? Warm bath too. Lots of walking to get things moving and some tummy massage. It might help. As might glycerine suppositories.

I would get her seen ASAP as she has complained of worsening pain today to make sure nothing else is going on especially if she hasn't been.examined since 3 weeks ago

I bought paediatric liquid gylcerin suppositories for my ds when constipated - worked in minutes and cleared him out gently but effectively! Avail on amazon and not expensive

Most chemists have them too. Couple of pound. Get some gloves and pop one in. Get the small infant ones. It does work quickly. Not pleasant but worth doing. Do you have a 100 hour chemist? Ours is open til 10pm

I do think that a doc should put a hand on her tummy as things are not improving. Is she eating normally? Does she feel sick at all? Is she drinking plenty?

Someone needs to check that there is not a total blockage on the go - I do not think she should be prescribed movicol (which is fine in itself) over the phone - someone needs to feel her abdomen first.

Last night around 9pm she was on the toilet quite a bit. She did poo more than she has been doing. This morning poo is very soft and sloppy. Not diarrhoea but it takes quite abit to get her bum clean and it is sticking to the toilet bowl. She has been twice within the hour.

I dont think she has worms but i will go through everything with the nurse when we see her on wed. She never itches her bum, i ve never seen anything in her poo and me and dh dont have itchy bums but i will mention it to the nurse.

Does it sound like the movical is working? Im wondering whether the sloppy poo is still a sign she is constipated and it is going round the blockage if that makes sense?

I have given her another movical this morning, i think i will just stick to one satchet a day until we see the nurse on wed as i dont want to give her too much.

She is not eating her main meals, but does seem to want snacky things like fruit, youghurt etc (but this is a common thing that dd does which we are trying to stop)

Hasnt complained of feeling sick.

Fluid is around 600mls of water.
