Well-known children's books with equally well-known illistrations

I need a list of very popular/famous children's books that have equally well-known (and distinctive) pictures, for a project I'm working on, and I'm stuck!
So far I have:

Room on the Broom
Elmer the Elephant

For me, E. Nesbit's books are just not right without the original illustrations, but they might not be well known enough for your purposes.

Paddington's original illustrations are very evocative and quite intriguing until you read the story.
I love the coloured pencil drawings by Raymond Briggs (The Snowman etc).
