Good reader aged 6 - any books?

DD is in Y1 and a keen reader. I don't understand reading levels but keen on reading silently to herself . I am looking for some ideas of books with chapters she could read to herself but where the story itself isn't too 'old'.

My daughter reads words well but does not 'get' older stories whe she reads them alone. She likes the little Chapter books we bought in a Walker books collection from The Book People- they are nice, varied books with 3 chapters. She may find them too easy if she's a very good reader. She also enjoys the little gems series. She'd read Rainbow Fairies all day bit I try to encourage a bit of variety! Dick King Smith books are lovely and very age- appropriate.

She is reading Alice in Wonderland currently. She can read the words (bar the odd one) but is struggling with the antiquated phrasing and often hasn't quite understood. I would like to read that together.

Mine is reading The Philosopher's Stone. He is also reading the first in a series by Helen Moss. Like Famous Five but set in Cornwall. I've also just rooted out some of my old Secret Seven and Famous Five books for him. I assume you've considered Roald Dahl?

I hadn't. She is quite innocent and 'little'. I would which Dahl she would get.

My DD (now 7) loved and loves Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf, Green Smoke, and Gobbolino the Witch's Cat.

Sally Gardener's books would be perfect; the strongest girl in the world etc.

The giraffe, the pellt and me is a lovely introduction to Roald Dahl, also Esiotrot. DD read those last year aged 6 and is now enjoying his longer books. Book people do a good set of Dahl books

My DD age 7 has loved reading the Worst Witch series. Proper chapter books, but the print is quite big and the chapters short, and great stories. Written from the 1970s to this decade.

The worst witch series, My naughty little sister series, The teddy Robinson series? I have recently read the first two to my six year old but he is quite capable of reading them himself (and has 'read on' to the next chapter to find out what happens next in the WW etc) All three sweet and not too 'grown up' in theme or vocabulary.

My DS is also a book worm at the moment and very into Roald Dahl - currently on George's Marvellous Medicine and before it was Fantastic Mr Fox. Maybe more boy-ish though.

The holly Webb books are quite nice, but did is still hooked on the decking rainbow fairies!!

Dahl is a firm favourite, but she also like "fact" books like usbourne my body, pirates, dinosaurs etc

She's currently reading the witches and insists on proving to her little sister that I can't be a witch as I don't wear a wig (complete with hair tugging ).

DD is enjoying reading 'The Worst Witch' and a set of books about ponies called Meadow Vale. She also likes the Winnie the Witch books too (the smaller, paperback ones)

Jill Tomlinson has a series of animal stories that DD (6.5) has loved as well as many mentioned above.

I rue the day they invented Rainbow Fairies, though!

My DS loved Oliver and the Seawigs too :) also Worst Witch books, Horrid Henry, the Grubtown series, Flat Stanley.

Second all the Roald Dahl suggestions. At that age I also loved the Joan Aiken short story collection A Necklace of Raindrops and the Puffin series of Stories for 6/7/8 etc-year olds - perfect for dipping in and out of between longer reads without reverting back to a 'baby' book (your DD may not be worried by this but I was highly competitive with older siblings ).

Mrs Pepperpot- each story is fairly short, so easy to read and take a break in between each.
Pippi Longstocking- again, chapters are reasonably short, and Pippi is hilarious.

Ds loved the Little House books at 6yo.
The girls liked things like famous Five too. Dd1 liked the Roman Mysteries, and dd2 liked Williard Price.

DD was a good reader. Agree with Olga da Polga, Worst Witch and some of the easier Dahl books above. Also remember Mr Majeika being right sort of length for that age too and think the larger typeface which helps.

I remember the Rainbow Fairies - felt like she read and had hundreds! Having said that I wouldn't stress if that's what is liked. DD is still an avid reader at nearly 15 and reading plenty of variety - currently The Great Gatsby! The formulaic stuff didn't put her off ...

All appropriate story-wise, but good, challenging reads too.
