Camping in Cornwall in August - do we have a cat in hell's chance ?

If we haven't booked? I've tried a couple of sites that we liked the look of but they're full. I'm thinking of being adventurous (well for us anyway) and just loading the car and going and seeing where we end up.

Anyone ever done this in Cornwall in August? Will we be sleeping in the car?

You will find a site I'm sure - just might be a bit... well... rough!

They had solar heated camping showers on This Morning today and they're really cheap on Ebay. I think I might buy two (one for me and one for the others!). If we find a camping loo too we're sorted. Any old field will do.

Lucky you Ooogs, living in Cornwall. Whereabouts are you - and do you have a big garden (only joking)?

We did Cornwall last week of July 3 years ago, with nothing booked, ended up in a wonderful family run B&B between Helston and Penzance! family room was then only £42 a night, bargin! if we managed to find a room I'm sure you'll find a campsite!

We want to camp, we've got another week away in France at the end of the summer, but just want a cheap week away.

Thanks Angel, we've stayed there! It was dsd's first holiday with us, we had a caravan and I could wake up and look at the surf . It was fantastic and a complete culture shock for me to be in Cornwall in August. I couldn't believe the queues but also couldn't believe I was actually sunbathing on the beach. I'd always been in March or October! I could give them a ring, I hadn't bothered as I'd presumed they'd be full.

Hi surfermum. We went to Cornwall last August and didnt get ourselves sorted until end of July. We got a place at Watergate Bay campsite which is about 4 miles north of Newquay. They have the main campiste and then a cheaper outerfield with more basic shower block, but it was fine, and near the beach. I will try and find the site.

That would be great, thanks. For the last 2 years we've stayed in a hotel just opposite Whipsiderry Beach and I surfed at Watergate (couldn't move for 2 days after, mind). I love that part of Cornwall.

I'll be at the Watergate Bay site in August too!
I've been there 4 times before and it's really good value for money with great shower/toilet facilities and free live evening entertainment which is not at all Butlinsy. A great place for a beach/surf/bodyboard type holiday. My kids love it there. The only very slight bad point if you want one is the aircraft noise as it is very near to Newquay airport and an RAF station.

Thanks, that's good to know. I grew up under the Heathrow flight paths, so the planes won't bother me and dd will enjoy pointing out the airplanes! Anyway I'll be in my beloved Cornwall so I won't care! When are you going?

If you are there at the same time as us though you won't be able to miss us as we've got a huge tent and 7 kids between us!!!

Beer sounds good!!!

You can keep your kids though!)

I went to this site years ago and for basic, cheap and spacious camping you can't beat it. It's near to Eden too.
Watergate Bay is much better for facilities though - and the beaches of Newquay are second to none.
