Could this have caused my daughters speech disorder ??

My daughter has a severe speech disorder, and is having speech therapy every week.
The speech therapist says that she was born with the disorder and that we couldn't have done any more to help her.
I just wondered though weather it had anything to do with my hyperemisis throughout my pregnancy?
Even before I knew I was pregnant I started being sick, and it got to the stage when I was being sick every 20 mins, day and night. It was awfull and I ended up in hospital for 5 days.
I just wondered weather my daughter was starved of the right nutreunts to help that area of her brain develop.
Could this be a possible cause ?

I'm sure the speech therapist is right. Don't worry.

Do you have a medical name for your daughter's speech disorder?

Report
Blandmum · 06/10/2008 18:29

I'm sure that the Speech therapist is right, and that you should stop beating yourself up.

Just think of all the people in the world who were born during droughts and famines.....there is no pattern of SAL issues in these cases.

Sometimes things , sadly, just happen

Anna 888 she says it's a phonological disorder, possibly verbal dyspraxia as she keeps biting ber tounge by accident and her mouth movements look quite uncoordinated to me.

Its hard i know when you have a child with special needs but the truth is that you can't know why this has happened to her. As MB says sometimes these things just happen.

How old is she? I used to look after a little boy with verbal dyspraxia.

Thanks everyone, you're right about the drought and fammin I suppose.
I just wondered wether it could've been prevented.
We are trying for another baby at the moment, so wondered if we could prevent it happening again.

Why don't you ask your daughter's speech therapist to recommend a book or two that you could read about this type of disorder?

It is always easier to put your mind at rest when you are well informed about a subject.

If you are worried about it happening again, why don't you see your GP?

But MLL

let's suppose, just suppose, that the hyperemesis was to blame (IT'S DEFINITELY NOT)

but suppose it was .. what the hell could you have done about that? ... nothing beyond what you did of course because there was nothing you could do then

you see, that way madness lies

believe me I know

The little boy I used to mind said only two words at 2 1/2 mama and No. Other than that he just used to screech. With lots of SALT input and help from me and his preschool he was saying a few words by 3 and by the time he started school at 4 1/2 could hold a conversation, albeit a slow and faltering one. He is now 8 and apart from his speech being a bit monotone and halting he is absolutely fine.

Babies are parasitic, you would have had to be half dead before it even STARTED to impact on your daufghter.

I know what you are going through but it really is just One Of Those Things.

There's not much point in beating yourself up over this, especially as a link is very unlikely. ds is dyspraxic , more common among kids who had assisted deliveries - he was ventouse and had decelerations during labour. Can't change it now though.

poor you, you really put yoruself through it, ive namechanged so you wont recognise me but we have spoken before, i have a lucy too. Your baby would have got all the nutrients she needed from you when you were pregnant, which is probably part of the reason you felt so shitty yourself, the baby will get what she needs, mummy comes second There is NOTHING that you could have done differently and this is NOT your fault. You are doing everything you can to ensure your little girl gets help every step of the way, this condition will be taken into account and she will get help at school so that it doesn't impact on her academically any more than it needs to. She will be fine. Please stop doing this to yourself.

Have you thought of getting some counselling for your worries? To put them in perspective. I think they are very valid worries im not trying to trivialise them, but maybe if you can "put them to bed" you can enjoy being a mummy to what sounds like a lovely little girl.

It really isn't your fault. I was told the other day that my son's speech delay and mild autism might be because I left their father when he was 14 months old. I was stunned and said 'cheers, thank you very much for that'.

I sometimes wonder if my dc2 had been my dc1, and got more attention (as a pfb) if that would have made any difference, so I understand that looking for a reason... but if there is a reason, it 's not your fault honestly!

That's true Twiglett, I just thought maybe I could've taken the anti sickness drugs earlier to stop it getting that bad. But I didn't want to take any medication, so I put it off for as long as possible.

I know I'm not to blame for it but wondered if there was anything I could do to prevent the second one from having the disorder.

My second child speaks perfectly for his age and I have done nothing different,. he went some way towards salving my needlessly guilty conscience.

I suffered from severe morning sickness with all 4 of my pregnancies, worse with the 1st 2, hospitalised with 2nd. 1st and 3rd DS's have ASD and 2nd DS (the pregnancy I was hospitalised and they were putting all sorts into my blood stream) was born with syndactly (figures joined together including fusion of the bone and nails). I feel this may have been caused by the sickness/medication as it is at the crucial development stage.

The ASD I think is genetic and not caused by the sickness.

The truth is we will never know for sure what causes these things and just have to deal with them because you really can't do anything about the sickness

I don't think you that hyperemisis could have caused Lucy's speech problems.

Verbal dyspraxia is often genetic and there is nothing you could have done that could have prevented it.

Thanks exaspiratedMummy, who ever you really are.
I do know it's not my fault, I did everything by the book (as usuall) I took follic acid, all the right foods, didn't have one drop of alcohol whilst trying or pregnant.
I suppose some things just happen, and you can't plan for every eventuallity.
This it what I'm struggling to realise, as I am very much a planner.
The problem with that, is that you can't help thinking "what went wrong, What's the reason".
I know that she could've been born with a lot worse than she has, and she is an absoluitly gorgeous little girl that I'm so proud of. I just feel sorry for her when she gets frustrated and no one understands her.

I also feel that I let her down by not understanding all that she says.
She sees me as her interpriter, and when she chats away, sometimes I don't understand a single word. This really upsets her, and makes me feel useless.
When she talks to people, they ask me what she's said and If I don't know, it's just really awkward. She is very sensitive and can't always accept that I havn't understood her. She crys whyle holding my face to hers saying "Look at me, Look at me" or "Listen Mummy".
I suppose I'm searching in vein for a magic cure.
