When did your babies crawl?

From the question, am hoping you aren't worried. In my entirely non scientific experience, the age they crawl/bum shuffle then walk varies hugely. My sportiest (sp?)Child didn't crawl at all and didn't walk until 20 months. You wouldn't believe the comments I got.

I think anytime up to 12 months is considered 'normal' for crawling, bit later for bum shuffling. If you are worried there are checks they can make.

My HV seems to think it is. 11 mo DD still not crawling and they keep calling me to see if she is doing it yet. She's up on all fours rocking, so it won't be long.
My DS crawled at 10 months and walked at 15 months.

Dd1 crawled at 11 months, walked at 15 months

Dd2 never crawled and walked at 9 1/2 months, for her missing crawling did effect her development, she has low muscle tone which Physio say is due to her not crawling and walking so early ( she has weak trunk muscles ), she's now 8 years old and has lots of physio that involves being on all fours. She does have other issues that don't help the muscle tone but her physio says she see's a lot of children that were early walkers with low tone.

DD crawled at 10.5 months and was walking at 14 months. One of her friends crawled at 6 months, but walked after DD. A paediatric physio colleague told me they don't actually tend to worry about crawling as a milestone so much now, as not all children do it.

Think the HV needs to calm down. Crawling isn't a milestone. Some babies just don't do it. And those that but shuffle tend to (but not always) be later walkers

Mine never crawled. First rolled over at 5 months, then just rolled everywhere until 7 months when she stood up and started cruising.

As you can see, they're all different :). Little boy at my dd's nursery sat looking at books until he was two, no crawling, cruising or anything. Then whe he could all but read, and his speech was very advanced, he decided to learn to walk. At 4 they could all walk and talk at the same level.

Not all children crawl. There is huge variability in how infants start to move on their own, and it's largely driven by experience and opportunity.

There's huge variability in when children walk too (anything from 9-18 months is unsurprising, and it's not necessarily a problem if they walk at 19 or 20 months). Again, it's driven by experience and opportunity (it doesn't just happen) so you can do lots to help your baby by offering tummy time on different surfaces, etc.

None of my three crawled, DD bum-shuffled like a demon but no crawling in this house.

They were all late walkers too - DS1 was 22 months, DS2 was 19 months and DD was 20 months.

DD didn't crawl or even bum shuffle at all, all she wanted to do was walk but she couldn't walk unsupported until 13 months. I had about 7 months of whinging to be held up. It was BACKBREAKING.

DS crawled at 10 months, walked at 15.

The range among babies I know has been from 5 months - 18 months for crawling, and 9 months to 2.5 years for walking.

The slowest starter was a preemie twin who's absolutely bombing around now age 3. You'd see no difference between her and the one who walked at 9months

DD1 never did crawl, and didn't walk until she was about 18 months old. Still the laziest girl I know!

DD2 crawled really early which was a nightmare as I had not had dealings with a crawler before, and she was walking at about 18 months as well. The second laziest girl I know.

All the people I knew who had late/early crawlers, potty users, talkers etc all now have perfectly 'normal' youngsters in their 20s.

I think it's very dangerous for HCP to be telling parents that they should worry about crawling (or lack of crawling) and saying that it has caused other health issues (your child would have low muscle tone whether they crawled or not!).

The research evidence shows very clearly that many, many children do not crawl. It varies between cultures (e.g. Jamaican children are less likely to crawl than North American children, because of differences in child rearing practices not anything sinister) and has varied over time (crawling used to be much less usual in the UK because we dressed infants differently and didn't put them on the floor so much). What constitutes 'crawling' is also enormously variable (is a commando crawl the same thing as a bum shuffle or a bear crawl?).

Dd never crawled at all. She never moved- no rolling or bum shuffling- until a week before her first birthday when she got up and walked! I spent hours trying to tempt her but she was just happy to be stationary. The hv said that they don't worry as long as babies are sitting unaided. She's 2.6 now, and you'd never know! Try not to worry, and ignore your hv!

Each phase was so brief, before she was on to the next challenge.
