DH and I love the name Gertrude, but my mum said she thinks it's awful - I said that lots of Victorian names are coming back, but mum says 'Yes, but only nice ones'. Come on, be honest - is it really an awful name? It would be Trudi for short.

laughalot Tue 11-Aug-09 13:28:19

Sorry im not keen

cheesesarnie Tue 11-Aug-09 13:33:15

i love it but gertie for short.it was my dh granny name and i was all for it as a baby name but dh wasnt.so dd had my grannys name instead!

Fimbo Tue 11-Aug-09 13:34:25

All I can think of is Dirty Gertie from No 30. smile

Trudi is nice.

Paolosgirl Tue 11-Aug-09 13:38:31

Ditto Fimbo.

Trudi makes me think of Sting's wife (can't remember her surname), so a "no" for that reason. Sorry!

Thunderduck Tue 11-Aug-09 13:47:14

It's truly horrid.

pixiestix Tue 11-Aug-09 13:47:24

Hmmm, the only Gertrude I know is a bitter, mean old bitch so it is a bit coloured for me!
Definite old lady associations.
But Trudi is really cute.

Tinker Tue 11-Aug-09 14:03:10

I think it's lovely actually. Love Gertie as well (was that the Drew Barrymore character in ET?). Trudi is ruined for me by the Sting associations

boodleboot Tue 11-Aug-09 14:08:32

i don't like gertrude but i do like gertie...i don't like trudi but i absolutely ADORE Truly....

midnightexpress Tue 11-Aug-09 14:10:15

I don't like it, and she's bound to get 'dirty Gertie', poor child. Trudi is OK, but does summon up an image of the dreadful Trudi S.

GrendelsMum Tue 11-Aug-09 15:34:25

Oh. Actually 'dirty Gertie' has really put me off. I grew up being called 'Fatty Cattie' and would hate to impose that on anyone else. And I wasn't even fat. Thanks for pointing that one out.

But since I've never heard of Sting's wife, and can't actually remember who Sting is (fields of gold?), that doesn't put me off Trudi.

Jujubean77 Tue 11-Aug-09 18:42:01

Trudy is lovely

Tidey Tue 11-Aug-09 18:43:41

I didn't think of Dirty Gertie, my first thought was Hamlet, weirdly enough, but I don't find it a very attractive sounding name in any case.

MaggieBelleVirgo Tue 11-Aug-09 18:44:42

hmmm... Gertie is so fugly that it's bound to be urban chic but that's all it has going for it.

I have a cousin called Trudy and her sister is Zelda. I've always LOVED the name Zelda and pitied her sister Trudy.

does that help!?

notbeingfunny Tue 11-Aug-09 18:46:28

I LOVE it. Wish we had called dd this. Brilliant name. A little girl called Gertie - so cute. Do it.

MaggieBelleVirgo Tue 11-Aug-09 18:50:11

Was the little girl in ET called Gertie?

I still hate it.

lena522 Tue 11-Aug-09 18:59:23

I really don't like it. Sorry.

I don't mind Trudi though.

everlong Tue 11-Aug-09 19:24:08

I've always loved it. I know it's not 'fashionable' atm, but if you and your dh love then that's all that matters.

LouMacca Tue 11-Aug-09 19:26:53

Absolutely awful. So many other nice names to choose from.

piscesmoon Tue 11-Aug-09 19:43:33

I can just about see that people like what I class dreadful names such as Ruby and Edith but not Gertrude-truly dreadful!

yama Tue 11-Aug-09 19:46:56

As kids I remember we would pretend we were called Gertrude as if it was the worst name in the world.

Sorry.

beanieb Tue 11-Aug-09 19:52:01

My granny was called Gertrude! How about Gerda?

Paolosgirl Tue 11-Aug-09 20:49:41

As in - Gerda your loins?

Sorry...!

MamaLazarou Wed 12-Aug-09 11:56:45

Dirty Gertie from number 30.

Sorry.

I did know a lovely Gertrude - she was German (probably still is!)
