What happens after 6 weeks with no name?

Just thinking. I know the time can be extended but what if when it really came to the crunch we couldn't agree on a name. Would the government issue a fine or are we assigned a name from a list - cos now I'm thinking we'll take our chances with option 2 and see what name we're given!

I think you just extend the period. Not sure HOW many times you can do this though. But you can definitely relax for a few weeks!! When's the 6 wks up?

Don't leave it too long though, i went to school with a girl who had 'female' on her birth cert. Made all the more hysterical by the fact that her surname was Fox. Her name was Sarah, so it always struck me as doubly hilarious that her parents thought about it for so long and came up with Sarah..

oh come on, you can think of a name.

whose surname is the baby having? if not both, then let the one who doesn't give the surname give the name, even if that means picking from a hat.

Do you know what you should do Pinsanon, give in, and let your wife choose! the pair of you sound like stubborn fekkers. and wait 'til you can't agree about whether or not to have the MMR, you'll need some credit in the leeway bank!

Sorry, FLAME me!

I prefer YOUR taste in names, but I'm not the child's mother! You should have married me, I'd call my baby Violet in a heartbeat.

What about Georgia Emily with possible nn Gemma? That's the last suggestion I can come up with!

they will just give a name I believe. but of course you can change a baby's name at any point in their first year, so you do have extra time, so to speak.

I can';t imagine not having a name for my baby for 6 weeks though. we did umm and ahh over ds2 for a while, but after a few days i just felt really odd referring to him as just "the baby" lol

our indecisiveness dithering slight delay is just a minor distraction, I was just curious what happens at the end of the line.

it's the wife who is stubborn! I'd happily let any of my choices be the name we stick with

Of course mine are better!

Stick names in hat. Pull one out. Sorted. Honestly, in a few months' time you'll be wondering why you agonised so much

Report
pinsanon · 01/01/2009 21:06

I'm all for names in a hat, as long as one of mine comes out!

In Spain you only get 2 weeks after the birth to register the child and its name.
We couldn't agree on a name for DD2 and so we had a vote at DD1s birthday party 12 days after the birth. There was a shortlist of about 4 names, only the adults could vote.

SenoraPostrophe!!!!!! There you are!

We are moving back to Scotland in July, any tips for surviving the first few weeks or months of culture shock etc?
Are you still glad you moved back?

do you not have a single one that you both think is "ok"?? if so then make a deal that if you can't choose you;ll use that. as I say, you can always change it later

Having passed a camel through the eye of a needle so to speak, surely that gives your wife naming privileges?

Actually, come to think of it, how about Camille?

ILoveBrucie · 01/01/2009 21:10

I am very happy to help, surely anything you choose is better than my choices

your wife should chose - she's the one who's gone through pregnancy and labour!! You get to chose the middle name....

and then when we're suffering the same problem tell my husband the same thing

I can't believe you've gone 3 weeks without naming your daughter. We decided on a name the day after DS was born, could have ummed and ahhed for longer but it felt so unfair calling him baby boy through the first night, and like we were such crap parents we couldn't make our first decision for him. So in the end I chose, tis only fair after the immense effort I went through carrying him and pushing him into the world.

loobylu3 · 01/01/2009 22:10

Surely you both just have to compromise at this stage! It seems really unfair to leave the baby without a name for this length of time!

Your dw gave birth, that gives her naming privileges ...you give dd her middle name.

What are your shortlists?
