Can I have Beth with an Eliza?

Struggling with girls names. I really like Beth/Bethan but when I told friends they said it was too similar to dd who is Eliza. What do people think?

We also like Jessica so opinions on which you prefer would be great.

Thanks x

No it’s the same name.

Jessica is good

How is Beth the same as Eliza?!! I think they sound nice together.

No - they are both just shortenings of Elizabeth. Having both seems very unimaginative!

It would be remarkably odd. You couldn't have sons called Will and Liam for the same reason. One name shared between two is a bit strange and people would comment.

Beth and Eliza are both forms of Elizabeth... both great names but they are similar. Jessica is lovely.

Yes I'm afraid it's a bit like Will and Liam, but with the added thing that they are both shortened versions of Elizabeth

Because beth and Eliza are both short for Elizabeth, and when you put then together that's what you get.
Jessica is very sweet, but go with beth if you want, and if people don't like it, it's none of their business.

Will and Liam are both shortened versions of William, but that's by the by Smile

Why not have Bethany then it’s less similar (although I imagine she will get Beth anyway)

According to Google, Bethan is thought to be a diminutive form of Elizabeth, meaning 'God is my oath'. But apparently Bethany has different origins.

Can you imagine calling them in the park?

Eliza, Beth....

People will think you're saying Elizabeth with a weird pronounciation

loveisevol · 09/11/2017 15:17

Ahh I was being a bit dim. Didn’t see the Elizabeth connection until I’d sat and thought about it.
I know a Beth and an Eliza and they aren’t short for Elizabeth.
Bethany would work.

Definitely not

When you say Eliza & Beth - people with think you are saying Elizabeth

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/11/2017 15:19

No, you can't, shame really as both lovely names.

Thanks everyone. How about if we just use Bethan? I do prefer this to Beth anyway. Is it still too similar to Eliza?

Yes that's still too close and weird. Sorry.

BusterTheBulldog · 09/11/2017 15:46

C’mon.... you just can’t

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 09/11/2017 15:51

Bethan will almost certainly get shortened to Beth so it doesn't really solve the problem

Don't do it

There are plenty of other lovely names that would sound good with Eliza x

Bethan is still too close I think. Jessica is nice.

BernardBlacksHangover · 09/11/2017 15:52

I think Bethan or Bethany is fine. Beth on its own would be too similar imo.

Sorry but it is weird. I have a Magnus and when I was pregnant with DS2 DH suggested Marcus, he genuinely couldn’t see that they were practically the same name!

Eliza is lovely, the sisters of the two that I know are Rose and Martha which I also love. Jessica is fine but a bit boring.

Absolute no from me. It says lack of imagination at best and not clever enough to know they are diminutives of the same name.

Sorry OP but there has to be another option

They may not be short for Elizabeth but they both come from Elizabeth.

You can do whatever you want, but there are thousands of names out there, so I can't understand why you would choose to do this tbh.
