Not so common a name I think.

Only heard of Bastian or basti as a shortening for Sebastian in Germany

Too close to bastard for me I think, how about Sebastian?

Twinkletowedelephant · 03/07/2017 18:30

I know a couple of Sebastians shortened to Bastie.

IIRC Bastien with an 'e' is a French name.

Bastion makes me think of a slightly dimwitted lump, I'm afraid. I'm not sure why the French version sounds better, but it does.

That you had forgotten to add "Se".

Only heard of it because of the German footballer, Bastian Schweinsteiger.

It sounds like half of Sebastian.

It spumds like a name which is currently quite common in Germany, though tbh I don't know whether that is spelt as you spell it or with an a as in (Se)Bastian. Shortened further to Bastie, which I don't like.

Please don't name your child this.

Bastion is a projecting part of a fortification such as a castle or fort. It's used in the expression "last bastion" meaning last stronghold, either literally ("the last bastion of enemy resistance") or metaphorically "a last bastion of conservative ideas").

Bastian is a common German diminutive of Sebastian (see "The Neverending Story").

Bastien is a less common French diminutive of the name Sebastien.

Nothing wrong with giving a boy the full name Sebastian and calling him Bastian.

He'll get called Bash as a NN.

Not keen.

There are strict rules governing what you can call babies in Germany, and any Bastions you may have encountered will undoubtedly be nicknames for Sebastian. I think it sounds awful, TBH. Basti is even worse.

Another "Go for Sebastian" from me, with Bastian as a NN if you like.

Bastien would be ok, although I personally don't like how it sounds, and I wouldn't use a typically French name unless I had some connection to France. Bastian looks like a nickname for Sebastian, and looks too much like "bastard" due to the two "a"s in it.

Bastion looks strange to me, immediately reminds me of Camp Bastion/Afghanistan and of military type things due to the meaning of the word. So it wouldn't be one for me.

Bastian is short for Sebastian .. I'd just give them the full name a shorten it as a family.

Never understand a nickname instead of the full version of a name
