I have a son named Oscar.

I really love Maddie. Thoughts?

GeillisTheWitch Tue 14-Mar-17 21:36:22

I'd use Madeleine and shorten it rather than just have Maddie on the birth certificate, other than that can't see a problem.

Just gives me sad thoughts. . Lovely name tho.

GraceW Tue 14-Mar-17 21:37:39

Yes, Madeleine on BC, but would go by Maddie until she decides.

Forever associated with the mccanns. I wouldn't.

mum2be2boys Tue 14-Mar-17 21:46:38

Lovely name. I've taught a few Maddies over the years and they have always been lovely!

I agree with pp, it will always be associated with the mccanns now, but I think once people meet your little Maddie, they will associate it will her, so I wouldn't let it put you off.

NavyandWhite Tue 14-Mar-17 21:48:38

I love Madeleine but not keen on Maddie.

Gummibears Tue 14-Mar-17 21:49:20

Maddie makes me think of someone or something very mad. I'm not keen, sorry

MadisonAvenue Tue 14-Mar-17 21:50:42

Lovely name!

Sugarpiehoneyeye Tue 14-Mar-17 22:03:08

Not keen.

joystir59 Tue 14-Mar-17 22:04:09

I just think of the missing child, sorry

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard Tue 14-Mar-17 22:05:29

Madeleine is lovely, but sadly it's tainted for me.

NavyandWhite Tue 14-Mar-17 22:06:28

Why would the "missing child" put you off? It's hardly on a par with Myra Hindley is it? Just an innocent little girl. Madeleine is a beautiful name.

Lilly16 Tue 14-Mar-17 22:08:59

I like it smile

TwentyCups Tue 14-Mar-17 22:10:41

For me it is maddie McCann, sorry.

However, it won't be for your daughters peers, or really anyone under 18 currently I imagine.

Glossolalia Tue 14-Mar-17 22:12:53

I really don't understand the Madeleine McCann references every time that this name comes up on a thread.

Every Holly, Jessica and Sarah thread doesn't have this. Why Madeleine?! sad

NavyandWhite Tue 14-Mar-17 22:15:15

Madeleine was not called Maddie anyway.

TwentyCups Tue 14-Mar-17 22:35:04

I think because it was a much less common name, and it's what the newspapers called her.

Anyway OP, as I said before nobody from the younger generations will make this connection so don't be put off.

PigletWasPoohsFriend Tue 14-Mar-17 22:37:09

Maddie makes me think of Dance Moms thank you DSD shock

Foureyesarebetterthantwo Tue 14-Mar-17 22:37:47

My dd had two good friends called Holly and Jessica. It did go through my mind, but their names are lovely and they are lovely, there's nothing more to think than that, they are their names.

I think Madeleine is a lovely name too, I just can't spell it!

MrsBungle Tue 14-Mar-17 22:39:19

Madeleine is a lovely name. I really dislike Maddie though.

NataliaOsipova Tue 14-Mar-17 22:40:15

I like Madeleine, but not Maddie. Ruled it out for my DD because of the McCann connection, but that was 8 years ago. It wouldn't necessarily put me off if I were thinking about it now.

RightOnTheEdge Tue 14-Mar-17 22:42:47

When I first glanced at your thread title, i did think of Madeline McCann. But there is a Maddie in my Dcs school. When I talk to her or hear her name I have never thought of the other Maddie.

It's a lovely name OP

RuthB4 Tue 14-Mar-17 22:43:49

It's a nice name. I've known several lovely Madeleines/Maddies. I think it's quite popular now? Which might or might not bother you.

I pronounce it Mad-er-lyn. How would you pn it?

yeahyeahyeahmama Tue 14-Mar-17 22:54:20

I have a Maddalena shortened to Maddy 👌
