Hi all.
We're deciding on baby names and for a girl we were thinking of lourdas and would be Lou-lou for short.
It's our favourite place in the world a little island in kefalonia in Greece.
What do you think?!?!

Kidnapped Sat 22-Oct-16 21:10:10

Sounds a bit like Lard Ass?

Could be a bit of an unfortunate nickname at school, unfortunately. Could use it as a middle name though?

PikachuSayBoo Sat 22-Oct-16 21:11:11

Is it pronounced Lord Ass. Because that's how I read it?

Kidnapped Sat 22-Oct-16 21:11:45

Waaaay too many unfortunatelys in that post. Sorry.

If you like Loulou as a nickname (which is very pretty), you could call her Louisa? Which is also very nice.

maldini Sat 22-Oct-16 21:12:01

No, sorry!

Do you mean Lourdes???? Pronounced the Spanish way?

maldini Sat 22-Oct-16 21:13:19

(I mean pronunciation wise)

FrancisCrawford Sat 22-Oct-16 21:13:57

Looks like Lourdes spelt inventively

Pluto30 Sat 22-Oct-16 21:15:26

Like Lourdes, as in Madonna's daughter?

No, sorry.

JinkxMonsoon Sat 22-Oct-16 21:16:30

If you really want Lourdas because it's sentimental, use it as a middle name. You can get away with offbeat middle names a lot more easily.

Gobbolinothewitchscat Sat 22-Oct-16 21:17:16

Um....how do you pronounce that?

Lou-Lou is all well and good but presumably your DD might not want to be called that at..say...35. So think carefully about the full name and how it would be pronounced and interviewed by non-Greek speakers. Eg could it look like a misspelling if Lourdes?

MotherDuckSaid Sat 22-Oct-16 21:22:44

middle name!

PoldarksBreeches Sat 22-Oct-16 21:26:24

It's not a pretty name.

Shurelyshomemistake Sat 22-Oct-16 21:55:07

No, definitely not. Lourd(e) in french means heavy, clumsy, lardy. And it sounds like Lardass, as other PPs have said. If you want greek-influenced, there are so many beautiful greek names. Xanthe, Zoe, Penelope, etc etc etc.

KateInKorea Sat 22-Oct-16 21:57:51

Yup... that child is at serious Lard Ass risk. Sorry?

Shurelyshomemistake Sat 22-Oct-16 21:58:14

Plus it's not a little island as far as I know, it's a place in Kefalonia confused

SirChenjin Sat 22-Oct-16 22:10:51

Oh no...Lord Ass or Lard Assshock

Lou-Lou is pretty - what about Louise or Louis? Or another Greek name?

SirChenjin Sat 22-Oct-16 22:11:04

Louisa

Massey1990 Sun 23-Oct-16 07:59:37

It's pronounced lourd-as so no not lard ass as its not spelt like that and I know it's not an island it's on the island of kefalonia.

DurhamDurham Sun 23-Oct-16 08:20:34

I would just assume that you were a Madonna fan who couldn't spell.

As I read the name I also pronounced it Lard Arse in my head, you can't do that to a child.

Massey1990 Sun 23-Oct-16 08:31:13

Some people are very rude!!

quicklydecides Sun 23-Oct-16 08:34:07

Oh give over, you asked for opinions.
Your child would be called lard ass by other children.
Hope that helps.

maldini Sun 23-Oct-16 08:39:23

You did ask!

GinIsIn Sun 23-Oct-16 08:42:52

It doesn't really matter how you pronounce it, it is a name that will be given unfortunate connotations by other people. Pointing that out is hardly rude. hmm

Chewingthecrud Sun 23-Oct-16 08:43:02

It looks made up time place name or no place name.
And yes completely see lard ass and not a great name to saddle a kid with

Use it as a middle name if you insist but not a first name

Sugarpiehoneyeye Sun 23-Oct-16 09:59:04

No.
