Honestly? It says stripper name to me. However, if you love it, you should use it. You'll only associate it with your baby!

Have you seen finding dory that's just come out? Destiny is a dozy whale in it that keeps bumping into things. I'm sorry but I don't love it.

Having seen 'Finding Dory' this week, I'd say no.

I heard this being shouted painfully loudly in my home town recently: "Desti-neh!!!! cum eee-yurrr."
Translation: "Destiny come here."

Now a running joke with my family when we're shouting each other in from the garden for tea or etc. *childish.

So it's a no from me, sorry.

I've taught a couple of Destinys in the past. Lovely girls. I think it's a perfectly nice name.

Apparently Miley Cyrus is actually a Destiny (don't ask me how I know this!). It does sound a bit exotic dancer-ish. Or maybe evangelical Christian. Which is an odd mix really.

I don't really like it, but I've definitely heard worse! If you love it, it doesn't matter what everyone on here thinks ignores that this is the whole point of the baby names boardSmile.

We're African American and lots of our friends and family (huge family) and church groups have used names we like (Faith, Hope, Grace) no one had used Destiny

I'd put it in the same category as Nevaeh. Although it's not as bad as Nevaeh.

It's Miley Cyrus' birth name, she legally changed it at 16. If even a celebrities kid can't pull off a name it's one to avoid.

In that case this might be a cultural difference. Are you in the UK?

Destiny is a bit more Woo than Faith, Hope, Grace which are clearly Christian.
If you want something with a distinctly American feel but not a whale what about Serenity, Harmony, Clemency ? I have American friends with DCs with these names. Chastity or Charity would follow the same pattern I guess but I don't know any.

I think the fact you're African American is relevant. While it has certain class connotations in the UK that mean I wouldn't choose it, it's a fairly normal name in America, particularly among certain church groups. The same way as a lot of other 'word names' make sense within specific cultural groups and not others (thinking things like Happy, Temperence, Crystal, etc).

Having said all of that; are you in the UK? I have a very normal name in the UK (dates me completely unfortunately) that is also recognisable in most of Europe. It's totally unrecognisable in America and India (possibly other places too) so when I work with those countries I have name issues. So if you are in the UK I might consider using Destiny with a more culturally usual middle name/nickname to avoid the class connotations/assumptions.

If you aren't then carry on and use the name if you love it.
