Maya or Maia.

I'd think you were trying to make a commonplace name more interesting.

Why not Maya?

Report
fruityb · 18/01/2016 18:04

All Maya's I've known at school are pronounced properly.

Vixxfacee · 18/01/2016 18:06

I would pronounce Maya as may a
I would spell it Mya.

The reason to not Myah is because I would say it Maya...

I would always say Maya as Mi - ya (I think it's mi-ja in Spanish). I have taught Maya's and never heard it as May-ya. But I can see why people might say it that way, so to make it easier for a child Myah would save her having to explain.

Why would you pronounce it wrong?

It's just the way my brain looks at it...

Myah just makes me think of someone sneering "nyah nyah na-nyah nyah!"

Hmm, not sure on it now...

You could go with Mya

Report
ShutUpLegs · 18/01/2016 19:23

I immediately thought it was a mis-spelling of Maya - either inadvertent or trying to be wilfully "alternative".

Report
ShutUpLegs · 18/01/2016 19:24

Mya looks like a mis-spelling of Mia.

Sorry OP.

It was between Meah or Myah... I'm really not one for creative spelling, but I'm just not keen on the originals :(

I would go for the ordinary spelling, Doggy - after all, you are going to be speaking/hearing the name far more than you are going to be writing it/seeing it written.

Fwiw, my parents went for an alternative spelling of my name - it is a very normal name and a very normal alternative, but having the alternative spelling means I have spent my entire life having to spell my name out to everyone.

If you choose a spelling that 'says' the name to you but won't to anyone else,my our child will have to do the same as me, and I promise you, it is a pain.

I am assuming that the name you like is Mia (pronounced Mee-Ah) - I think it is a lovely name, and very elegant.

If the name you want is pronounced M-eye-ah, I would spell it Maya, which is also a gorgeous name.

If you like Meah, then how about Leah?

I'll be honest, when I saw your thread title I read it as 'm YAH' as in a posh air kiss myah myah kind of sound. It didn't register as a name at all.

I'd go Mya, all the Mia/Maya spellings are a big ambiguous I think.

So yes, Myah or Mya look the most like you want it pronounced, so I'd use either.

I went to school with a Myah- pronounced mye-ah (so I don't think it's an unusual spelling providing that's how you want it said!) and from what I remember she never had anyone mispronounce her name. I think if you prefer the Maya (may-ah) pronunciation you'd need to spell it that way to avoid her having to correct people every time
