Baby names

Emrys or Huw?

Title says it all really! Love both names, I probably prefer Emrys and DH prefers Huw but we are open to both. Emrys is presumably less well known to non Welsh speakers. My Dad is called Hugh though so wondering if that will cause issues.

Any thoughts much appreciated :)

Huw is lovely, short and sweet and I think works just as well for a grown man, a teenager and a baby - sounds strong and manly but kind and loving. Emrys is nice too, could you have it as a middle name? Or maybe wait until the little one arrives and see which one he looks like? If you get on well with your dad I think using the same name but Welsh spelling would be a lovely idea.

Thanks Peach :) We love Huw because it's so timeless and suits all ages like you say :) I am close to my Dad and I'm sure he will like it. I don't want to upset the IL s though, that's my maim concern with Huw. Otherwise it's definitely my favourite I think :)

Huw! Fantastic name for a cute kid, surly teenager, and distinguished gentleman! biased, me? never!

Both nice but I prefer Huw. Sounds more "solid" somehow.

Emrys.

I don't like the look of Huw.

Love both names.

What about Emlyn as an alternative to Emrys?

Emrys. Unless you aren't fussed that everyone will say Hugh rather than Huw. The mum of a Huw I knew was fussed and it became 'a thing'

I should know this but don't: how is Emrys pronounced? Is it tricky for Anglophones?

I don't know how Emrys is pronounced either. My brain is telling me 'Em-Rees' but I'm sure that that is not correct.

Anyone who knows the Merlin story knows Emrys. Huw is an old man name to me.
Different spellings in the family will be so confusing. Why not Hugh then?

Huw and Hugh are pronounced the same.
I prefer Huw. Although I know Emrys is a boys name (I'm a welsh speaker) I think its a bit feminine sounding.
