Hi, DC2 due in a few weeks and struggling with Irish boys names. I'm Irish and DH English so struggle to find a strong recognisably Irish name that won't cause too much of a headache with spelling/pronounciation growing up in UK. Lorcan seems to tick the box but after running it past a couple of Irish family members they both seem to butcher the pronounciation IMO!

Would you pronounce Lorcan as:

  1. Laur-can ( almost Laur-cun) or
  2. Lar-kin (much shorter sound)

I really hate the pronunciation no. 2 (sounds so harsh) but even when prompted my DM can't seem to get her tongue around pronunciation no.1! (The difference is definitely just the accent as apparently I'm saying it with an English accent whereas to me they're shortening the vowel sounds too much.)

How would you pronounce it? WIBU to call DS Lorcan and tell my family in Ireland we pronounce it like no.1?? And hope/assume that growing up in England everyone else will pronounce it like no.1... Or am I just settling myself up for years of headache?!

Having not heard it spoken before, and being English, I would have gone for 3: Lor-can

You can't control people's accents. Just go with the flow.

I know a Lorcan and his parents pronounce it Lurkin. Unfortunate pronunciation I think.

Laurrr- can.

Irish people pronounce the letter 'r' properly more strongly than English people.

I'm Scottish & worked with a Lorcan in Kent. I pronounced it Lor-kin. All the English folk pronounced it Laur-cawn (think posh English). There were a few Eastern Europeans & South Africans & the pronounced it Lor-can. I have to say I love the name...we almost named DS2 Lorcan.

Irish R pronunciation defeats some English speakers/accents.

Lore-kun

No matter which name you pick it will sound different in your Irish accent and your husband's English accent so there's no point stressing about it too much. Whereabouts in the country are you that it sounds like Lar-kin?

Thanks for the replies! I hadn't even thought about Law-cun but living in England he probably would get that a lot. I don't mind that it's just Lar-kin/Lahr-kin (family in SE Irl) that I can't stand. And the fact that my DM can't pronounce it my preferred way is going to drive me batty as she enquires how Lar-kin is every day... Even if we tried a nickname like Lori she's pronounce it more like Larry! :(
