Damn you Miley Cyrus

So back when I was at university I knew a couple called Kylie and Michael, everyone called them Mylie as a "couples name" (Brangelina style.) I really liked the name from then..I remember thinking it would make a nice name for a daughter one day! Funny because I'm not a fan of Kylie/Riley but really liked Miley.

Do you think there's any possibility of being able to use it without the Cyrus connection? Even when she rose to fame as Hannah Montana I thought "oh well she seems sweet enough" so would have still used it. I'm hoping by the time my DD is older Cyrus will be long gone but I have a feeling that is wishful thinking lol think she may be one for the history books!! And even more annoyingly my DH loves Millie which I am not so keen on so Miley would make for a great compromise.

Anyone else think it's a nice name though? Her real name is actually Destiny but was nicknamed Smiley as a youngster which got turned into Miley. Just found that out today!

I know a Miley and she is exceptionally cute.
Despite the connection I actually think it's quite nice.

Only1scoop I don't dislike Millie I just wouldn't use it as a full name, and really don't like Camilla. Amelia/Emelia is far too popular now. I know there's a few other names that can have Millie as a nn but haven't found any I am really taken with!

I think of Miley Cyrus... But eventually people who know your little girl will think of her first instead.

I know a Harper, I don't think Beckham.

And if you have your heart set on a name, I wouldn't let the fact that its a celebrities name put you off.

I think it's a lovely name and I'm sure Cyrus will have disappeared up her own backside by the time your dd is grown up enough to care.

Fwiw, my ds1 has an unusual name, but a few years after he was born nobody really remembered the (quite cool) person he was named after or the (incredibly not cool) celebrity of the same name who was famous for 15 minutes.

I also know someone whose NN is smiley Miley and I think it's really cute!

I would absolutely implore you to put the name aside forever. It will be associated with that Miley for a long to come. It would be like calling your kid Kylie or Britney or Beyonce.

For Irish people the name Miley has a double connotation,as well as Ms Cyrus it's also the name of a still much referenced soap character from the 80's

Miley is a no no because it's not even a real name so Cyrus girl kind of owns it.
I know a Mailyne (pron may-lyn), which I found quite pretty, but maybe because she is stunning and nice so good association...

Squoosh GrinGrinGrin he'll always be Miley to me!

OP i think it would be dreadful to be named after Miley Cyrus! I know you wouldn't be naming a dd after her but everyone would assume you were (and the original story isn't that cool either so either way would be a lose/lose situation for your dd). I'd suggest leaving aside all M names and starting with a blank slate.

I also know a Miley at my DCs school, who is super cute and when I think of the name it reminds me of her, not Cyrus.

Cyrus will be linked to that name for a long time to come . Don't do it to your little girl!!!!! :-) I agree with the poster who said it would be like calling your child Kylie.

I agree people would come to think of your daughter before a one time celebrity. Also, you could create a little separation by using the Hawaiian spelling, Maile (pronounce Miley still) which is the name of the pretty green vines they use to make leis there. No sentimental connection to Hawaii? Take a trip and make one. Grin

I always think Cyrus, and I know a few Mileys. Sorry! Marlie? Maybe Miley as a long shot nickname for Madeleine?

Miley is a no no because it's not even a real name so Cyrus girl kind of owns it.

Really? I'll have to tell my 36-year old friend that, who was given the name, as it was her mother's middle name and her grandfather's middle name too.

When my friend researched her family tree (on Ancestry), she found not only was it an old family surname, but her great-great-great grandfather had Miley as a first name.

Not only that, but when she searched for Miley as a first name on Ancestry, she found hundreds of people with the name (as a first name), some as far back as the early 19th century.

While I accept that the modern connotation of the name, is with Miley Cyrus, to say it's not a real name is simply not true.
